New Compact, which?

Currently have a Fujifilm XP which replaced a previous Fujifilm when the screen broke (my fault).

I normally use a Nikon D90, but the compact is generally for nights out, gigs or anywhere the DSLR isn't appropriate.

The problem is that the XP is hugely frustrating. There's a significant delay from pressing the button to actual shutter release and it seems very sensitive to movement. There's also a slightly annoying lack of adjustment.

So i'm thinking about trying something else. The essence of what i use the compact for means that it needs to be a little bit robust.

I've been looking at the Nikon AW100 and Canon Powershot D20. Anyone had any experience of either?

No, but they will all have shutter lag. Mitigate this by semi-depressing the release button in good time, wait until it gets a grip, then fire. The 'sensitivity to movement' is probably because you're not using flash and the camera doesn't have enough aperture/ISO to get a decent shutter speed.

Two very good reasons to use a DSLR!

I think: "they all do that, Sir!". No experience of the AW range, but I have a P7000 and it is dreadful for anything where speed is important. I couldn't recommend a Nikon compact.

Get yourself a 45mm f/2.8 Ai-P and stick on your SLR when you want to go light......

That's what i feared (& to be fair have experienced on two previous Sony compacts and the previous Fuji. Bloody annoying!)

May have to just go and play. The problem is that last night / yesterday was typical of how i use the compact. Went to Knebworth to see the Chili Peppers. 'Professional Cameras' defined as any camera with a detachable / interchangeable lens, were explicity prohibited. I know that there's always a chance i could get it in, but i don't want to end up losing the D90!

In a crowd, just want to point and shoot. Problem is, it's point. wait. wait. Shoo... oh arse, the shots gone now!

Worth a gander, perhaps?


(Otherwise Nikon are excellent for glass and quite good for dSLRs but...... Maybe Canons are quicker? Someone knowledgeable on these will be along in a minute....)

Not exactly 'compact', but my Sony HX20 is rapid when it comes to taking a picture. Not sure on the specs of it, but it's quick.

Nikon 1 have interchangeable lenses though? Might they still fall foul of the Pro camera check police?

There seem to be a lot of new things coming out at the moment. Who knows what might be next?

Keep an eye on the dpreview site and perhaps a few others - Steve's Digicams maybe? - and see what they say.

Canon are roumoured to be launching a mirrorless camera soon - but with a removable lens. Does lack of mirror housing make it amateur even if the lens can be changed? I doubt it.

How about that Nokia phone with the 40Mpix sensor? Should be able to do something with that?
