Guys,

I used my Garmin Edge 500 for the first time today. I need some advice on training zones - in the Garmin Connect training zone settings it seems to allow you to add as many zones as you want.

How many should I have?

Which zone is best for building general fitness?

Do I use the 'average' heart rate for a ride to see which zone the ride put me in, or does it go on max heart rate? for example, according to the Garmin analysis, todays ride was "Average 0.9z, Max. 4.2z, how do I interpret this? (figures were ave. 109 bpm, max. 160bpm).

I'm 42 years old, 70kg, resting heart rate 54, 5'10" tall if that's any use. No idea what max. heart rate is or how to determine it (cycle up a steepening hill until I fall over maybe?).

Thanks in advance.

ETA, I've got a cold, so todays ride was a gentle one. Unfortunately at the moment, on average I only manage to get out biking a couple of times per month.
