Not an 'oh my, these engines are mince' thread.

I see a few have been rebuilt due to issues/wear and tear and I know the usual suspects that do a good job.

Does anyone build stronger, more powerful, upgraded versions though?

Or is it a case of why bother, just buy a gt3?

Is the carrera engine at it's limits and not very tuneable? If not, just what is available in NA form?

Cheers,

Hartech modify and improve things - I would think the term "re-engineer" would be appropriate - when they rebuild them. They're done individually for each customer though, so for a belt and braces approach you'd want one where they've done everything they can offer (even though some of this would be deemed unecessary). I'm not sure if they can offer any internal modifications to increase power but if the engine's stronger it should give more confidence to imrpove the induction and exhaust sides of things, which together with a remap should get 30bhp or so? Maybe more. Speak to Grant to discuss it. smile

So we're looking at around 320/330 with breathing mods. I'm wondering about a more aggresive cam, headwork, without going to the expense of a 3.8L build.

964 with same level of work you'd be looking at around 290/300 I imagine?

Trying to weigh up which would be the more rewarding base car with a view to improving a little and not end up in a pissing in the wind, should have bought a gt3 outcome.

Suspension and brake upgrades are a given 1st port of call either way.

So buying a 996 with a wrecked engine and getting an engine from Hartech would be a good starting point?

A healthy standard 964 will make 290bhp after a trip to Wayne at Chipwizards, a pair of cams, better breathing and Motec etc will get you to 350bhp+. Unit 11 built one for a one-off 1972 bespoke car that with throttle bodies too came in at 365bhp - IIRC the engine cost over £30k though.

I think Porsche quoted figures used to be more conservative, and with a greater amount of extra power available with not too much difficulty.

Thats interesting. 964 would be my choice for looks, sounds, investment.

Price of 996s are hard to ignore but a well sorted 964 would probably be the better long termer.

Are you not better off getting a GT3?

unless you can pick up a blown engine one for pence after doing all the expensive work is the car worth anything after woods and will it be as good as a GT3?

A GT3 won't lose that much money I wouldn't have though so would be a better prospect without the headache?

Just my thoughts.

Whats a decent gt3, 40k?

10k 996, 10k engine, 5k suspension. Maybe only worth 15k when youre done?

Personally I would be looking for a 964 or maybe 993 if I was to throw some money at them.

But I can see the appeal I suppose. I think you would need to get some proper quotes and see what they can do.

Exactly - a GT3 is the way to go (or a nice modified 964 for £25k). Also, it'd be quite a narrow market to find someone willing to pay £15k for a car with that done when similar standard cars are only £10k.

Not got your hands full with the ferrota olber?

There's a member on here looking to sell an already modified 996 that's had an auto farm rebuild?

Thats a project for the old man really. Might need to wait till the garage is built before I can do that properly.

I'd like a ready to go 911 I can drive as soon as i've got this cash out the house but i'd like to know theres gains to be had from tinkering that arent going to be pissed into the wind.

In all likelihood therein lies an oxymoron....

You can get 997'S's for much less than £30k even £25k which is what 380bhp out of the box... If you want a faster 996 buy the turbo gt2 gt3 RS etc
Pissing £10-15k on an engine improvement which is still not a patch on the GT3 would be a passion of love not a financially viable option really

you can build a regular 996 C2 engine out and to a spec where it could be extremely strong and robust if you are prepared to pay for it. lightened this and that, forged this and that, proper oiling setup to deal with those issues, cams, heads, LWFW etc etc.
fwiw i had one done using an MY99 3.4 engine as the starting point. gave 395HP, 326lb/ft when finished.
its much too much engine for a regular C2 though, you would need to uprate suspension and braking as a minimum afterwards.

I think its 'just buy a GT3'. The initial outlay is higher but I am sure that the total cost of ownership will be lower. And its a GT3.

£15k into a cheap 996 is pretty pointless in my view.

What about a higher mileage or CAT D GT3?

Olber - I'm considering selling mine as I am moving to the States and I've been trying to get an idea of value and it's tough out there!

I think a rebuilt engine would offer more but at the time, it would have pushed me into GT3 territory.

I need to re-upload my pictures!

GT3 is only the way to go IF you can/want to sink £40K into the car. Granted you may well get more of the £40K back on resale, but it's still £40K you need to have lying around.
I don't think you'd need to sink anything like £15K into a standard 996 engine/chassis to get a decent result. Especially if you buy a car with a Hartech/Autofarm rebuild, which should be £15-20K tops. There are quite a few around now. The trick is to buy a car with most of the work already done as you never get it back on resale.
