Is it safe to use Santander considering the issues in Spain?
Vaguely safer than crossing the road or taking an airplane somewhere. Yes, as above, don't give them more than £85,000 without thinking about it. Expect their systems to be every bit on a par with RBS/NatWest for some exciting times. But beware that they probably shouldn't really be allowed to put "Customer" and "Service" in the same sentence in anything like a positive intonation - have you seen their queues?
The bottom line is that there isn't a bank - by which I mean a properly set up organisation, with authorisation from the UK Financial Services Authority - which should be any greater risk, in the sense of "will my money still be there?", than any other.
The risk is that, having stuffed your money under their mattress, circumstances might change or the bank might set the rules that play into their favour - not yours. Like dropping existing savers' interest rates in the chase to offer carrots for new money .... et cetera.....

Does that cover apply to business accounts too?
It depends.....http://www.fscs.org.uk/what-we-cover/questions-and-answers/qas-about-deposits/#Is_a_business_covered_if_the_bank_or_building_society_it_holds_money_with_fails_ (Link to FSCS website)
For businesses - small businesses (regardless of legal status), associations, et cetera, of turnover below £1,000,000 per annum are "generally" equally entitled to compensation as your average man-on-the-street.
(Of course, like everything FSMA-related (FSA/FSCS) it's never very simple, there's a complicated list of what's not covered rather than a simple answer!)

Barge, pole, wouldn't, with, a and touch - rearrange into a sentance.
As someone above said their use of the words customer & service should be outlawed. Sadly as with many companies these days they employ people in call centres who know somewhere between nothing and f
kall about the products they are dealing with, and this lot are about the worse.

However, I wouldn't use them. Not because they're Spanish, but because they really are a piss poor excuse for a f
king bank, who don't know their f
king arse from their f

king joke! They're as much f

I think your building their part up a bit, at least with a chocolate teapot you could put the money in it, and as long as things didn't get to hot or you get too peckish the money would still be there! However, I wouldn't use them. The Satander web saver seems to be giving the best rate. Surely I can't have the customer service problems with a web account for a year? Should I go for it?

They recently changed their online security policy and removed the "?" in my password without telling me, so in effect made it less secure
Oh dear, OK thanks guys. I think I might take a look at ING Direct instead then. I use them for business and it's free which helps

Saying that, I've had no real issues with them mostly because I have simple needs - online banking, a few cheques here Nd there. No borrowing or the like.

Thanks, it would seem that ING Direct are offering better interest rates now anyway. I use them for business and it's free which helps
