It's all in the preperation

Nope, you're spot on there!
Makes a huge difference. I don't like tomato on a sandwich unless it's sliced very thinly. Same goes for cucumber. Carrots are better when cut into batons rather than sliced. I love pate, but I hate liver.
It's all about the texture, which changes with different preparation methods.

Burger buns!
A tip I shamelessly nicked from 'Man vs Food'. Melt some butter in a bowl, cut bun in two and paint cut surface with melted butter using a pastry brush. Place butter side down into a hot, thick bottomed dry frying pan and griddle/toast until cut side is an even golden brown.
The difference this makes to a home-made burger has to be tasted to be believed!
