2 adults, 1 10 year old, done Dominican republic last 3 years don't want to continue doing the same though the last 3 have been great breaks and we are drawn back, looking to leave between boxing day and new year.

Like warmth, love beaches not over active just somewhere to unwind, looked at Cuba & Mexico but they both look similar to what we have already done, Gambia ? Goa ? Kenya beach holiday ? Any recommendations suggestions welcome.

Did look at Cape verde but told it can be very breezy and not particulary warm during December / January ?

I'd say if it's just a beach you're after and don't particulary like exploring the area then I'd be tempted to say if it ain't broke then don't fix it. IMO (I've been to most of the places you mention) the only beach destination that I'd be tempted to go back to just for beach holiday would be the Maldives although I'd imagine the cheaper AI places will be out of budget particulary with it being Christmas time.

Goa is nice, but assuming you go AI in Dominican Rep then you may find there is a lack of choice when it comes to quality AI hotels that you might be accustomed too, if you're looking at Goa, Kerala is also worth a look. The Gambia is also nice, def hot at that time of year (pretty consistent in temps all year round almost) but again a lack of AI but food is cheap but hawkers high. If you were willing to explore the bird life is interesting as a several other possible excursions. Kenya will be hot, if you fancy doing a safari then this would be the biggest bonus to Kenya IMo over the other, then again maybe not your thing.

Anyhow when it comes to holidays that are centred just around the beach and sunbathing I don't see the difference between one place and another within reason, just returned from Mauritius and was underwhelmed, you could easily have been in one of a number of countries with palm trees and nice beaches. There was plenty to do but was expensive. Cuba especially is more of the same, and depending on which part you go to Mexico is far more commercial, but also has allot of interesting sites such as the Mayan ruins.

£5k -yikes - How much... yikes - for some lazing on the beach and winter sunshine?

You could do a bit of carefull shopping around and get all the sunshine and warmth you need with a week in the Canaries for about a tenth of that - and it's just 4 hours away. Self catering at Las Marismas in Furteventura, epic beaches, fantastic inland hooning roads and some wonderfull restaurants. Forget the Daily Mail reader beer and chips in the sunshine image of the other islands and walk past the odd Sky sports bar or Bulldog pub - this is a seriously good value winter destination.

Hire a car and go exploring off the beaten track, have some of the best beaches in the world almost to yourself everyday, eat out well every night and relax and enjoy.

That sounds great apart from the wind and the cold weather in December and January.

OP did say winter - Nov and March is when we usually go and nine times out of ten will have a fortnight of warm sunny weather. True you will get a few windy dull days especially right in the middle of winter and it really can rain when it wants to. We celebrated Christmas day a few years ago by sitting on the beach with a picnic and a few tins of beer for lunch and thinking of all the snow, frost and rain back home. Lovely lick

We tried Tenerife around 5 years ago, your correct with an hire car great but the weather was awful when we we there, great for watching the rollers roll in on the beach but dressed for a British autumn day at the same time.

Southern Lanzarote and northern Furteventura have a micro climate that's generally better than all the other Canary Islands. Usualy this does not matter too much but when the normal NE trade winds are upset by either mid Atlantic depressions, remains of storms in the gulf of Mexico or an easterly blowing off the African coast the weather is often better here than anywhere else on the islands. Both island airports are outside this climate zone and the published weather statistics are taken from there, often painting a worse picture than it really is.

If there's any significant easterly or westerly in the wind direction clouds will quickly build up over the islands in the morning as the warm moisture heavy air rises. You can often still have a day in the sunshine when the rest of the islands are under heavy cloud cover by choosing a beach as far upwind as possible. Easterly wind in Furteventura means Corralejo sand dunes and in Lanzarote Papagayo beaches and westerly in Furteventura go for El Cotillo and El Golfo in Lanzarote. Not foolproof by any means - you need to look at the cloud formation and winds to work out what's going on - but you'll often drive out of the dull weather into bright sun as you approach the beach.

No jet lag. Relatively cheap. Safe as any other place if you stick to the main City.

Lots of family-oriented hotels around Camps Bay and the V&A waterfront.

Hire car. Drive on the left. Plenty to see and do.

CAVEAT: the Atlantic is freezing cold all year round.

The water is apparently warmer in the winter than the summer. AWESOME place but not sure it's what the OP is after though. The beach at Camps Bay is lovely but if they're used to places like the DR it's very different i.e. public beach no huge hotels etc.
