Chaps, this looked like a good place for a family swimming pool/beach holiday in August with the chance for the grown ups to see venice on a couple of day trips.

has anyone stayed here and can you offer any advice esp. Regarding a half decent hotel

Cheers

Stayed there a couple of times but a long time ago, was nice from what i remember. Only thing i remember solidly was the annoying ambulance siren going along the main street to the hospital every 10 mins or so.

I have stayed in lido de J, before.
Basically if you wish to go to Venice and still want a beach holiday its the best and only option.
The better the hotel the better the experience. I went there 20 years ago so forgive if things have changed.

I went there 15 years ago.

It's very package holiday but does meet your criteria. Personally I would not return.

It's the "Venetian Riviera" in the same was that Torquay / Paignton is the "English Riveria"

Sorry can't help on hotel as it was so long ago (and may well have changed a lot)

I've been to Lido with the parents in the 80's & 90's about 6 times and it's a nice, family environment.

Quite packagey, but not to the extremes you'd see in Spain or the Canaries, etc.

Although, if your main reason to go to Lido is to visit Venice, be warned that:-

a) Venice will be super hot and totally crowded in August,
b) it will stink because it's August, and
c) it's far nicer in Autumn when St Marks Square floods.

I accept that doesn't help if you're talking about a summer holiday. Or look at Cattolica, which is a bit further round the coast, 40 mins from Rimini.

I can second Union Lido, it's fantastic place - far enough away from Lido not to be "package-y" too.

We've been going for the past 15 years, it's great for families and keeps getting better and better each year. The hotel is very pleasant, you have free use of all of the facilities of the main site whilst you're there too (beach / "lagoon" swimming pools etc.)

I know someone who rents out a nice caravan there if that's your kind of thing, if you are interested then just drop me a PM.

Yep, there is only one hotel at Union Lido, its called the "Art & Park Hotel". They also have various apartments and villa's dotted around the campsite that you can rent too if you fancy self catering (they refer to them as the "lodgings")

The Union Lido website isn't the best laid out unfortunately but it's worth persevering as it's often cheaper to book directly with them rather than through other sites.
