Shattered carbon frame

Spent the last 5 days ridding in the south of France, unfortunately  one of our party had a head on collision on a very fast mountain descent (he takes full responsibility...he was cutting the corner)

Fortunately other than one swollen sore leg and a few other light cuts and bruises he is ok.

His bike however literally broke in three, top tube, both fork arms, bottom bracket etc. Needless to say this probably absorbed most of the energy however also resulted in a lot of sharp edges

Bit of duck tape and you'll never know there was anything wrong with that frame

My brother did this a few years ago and was unlucky to get a carbon splinter in his thigh, his description of the pain while the doctors tugged and twisted it to get it out was enough to make most listeners screw their faces up horribly, most amusing.

Glad he is ok, one lucky fella.

I'll have a 3 month old Moda Stretto frame 56cm available this week. It's has forks (and brakes fitted if required) as changing to an Air 9.8 frame

Probably want about £850, it is at Moda being checked before I sell to make sure it is "as new" structurally so will have a clean bill of health.

I suspect an ali bike would have been a load of bent tubes with razor sharp edges, so not much in it really.

I am more amazed that the front wheel seems to have stood up better then the frame.

I've seen plenty of snapped frames in the races I do. However that one is mental! Difference between a snapped from casued by another rider landing on it and one that is caused by riding in to a car!

Cut the BB section out with a few inches of tube on each side, mount it on a base and make a crash of the month / year award with it. A mate of mine made one from an old steel frame with a plaque and everything. Thankfully I have never won it.

That and how much seat pillar is sticking out makes me think that the frame was too small anyway. Good excuse to get a bigger one ?
