Commuting tyres

I've got my CTW roadie for dry days, but I don't want to knacker it, so I'm still using my middley-range MTB for commuting.

My commute starts with a field or two, then road, then finishes with more gentle off-road. I'm thinking MTB tyres are too rough, but road tyres won't grip across the fields (which I go around rather than across on my roadie).

Is there a decent, cheapish* tyre that's more road-biased than regular MTB without being almost slick? It's got 26" rims if that makes a difference to availability.

They are excellent in all but mud, as they fill up quickly. On dry or wet hard pack and rocky paths they are excellent. Roll well on Tarmac too.

I have these:



Panaracer Crosstown.

They're slick enough to roll well on the road, and have enough tread to grip into loose dirt and gravel. They're not great in mud, but fine on slightly firmer offroad.

They're also apparently puncture proof. I've had them on for a year now, cycling 5 miles a day plus some weekend excursions, and I'm a fairly heavy chap.

I've just got a pair of the Schwalbe Land Cruisers to put on my spare bike that I'll use more on road than off. I looked to see if there was a direction of rotation arrow and there is but it is reversed for front and rear. Is this correct?

It is, traction for the back, braking resistance for the front so the tread often points in opposite directions f/r.
