Do you mean there and back in the day? It's 4 hrs drive given a clear run, plus of course however long it takes you to navigate in and out of LA.

Tight to do in a day in my experience (& I have to say that 4hrs, even with a clear run, is a little optimistic)

If you want to do LA, take at least a couple of days. If you only have a day, try Palm Springs

As the above posts.
Very boring road, often accidents due to falling asleep.

Probably best not to bother. Do the Grand Canyon or something instead - We had two days in LA, and that was nowhere near enough.

260 miles each way to anywhere near Downtown LA, figure an hour to do the last 20 miles easily.

Flying, you're looking at £120ish each return and about 2hr door to door

It is worth doing, but only if you've got enough time on the other end to do it justice.

Oh, and stop in Barstow at the In-N-Out burger for the best fast food of your life. Just brush up on the menu first!

There are better unless you really want to see the world's largest thermometer.

Only plus might be the state line where you can see Bonnie and Clyde's death car. Which is essentially an old car with an awful lot of holes in the bodywork.

Wife and I drove from Vegas to LA last year, took us over four hours to get from the outskirts of LA to Santa Monica. Wouldn't bother if I were you.

Try a drive out to Death Valley, Valley of Fire State Park or Zion National Park.

I drove From Canada to Vegas and back and have to say the novelty wore of real quick!!!

Death valley is good, as is the Hoover dam if you want a break from Vegas.

Seriously thinking of dumping the kids at Grandma's and taking the wife to Vegas myself this august.

Have done the drive to LA and enjoyed the experience - it involves driving through the Mojave Desert which is an experience for those of us used to UK roads / scenery. Agree however that it's not worth doing the return journey in a day. If you try the Hoover Dam you can rent a speedboat and blast around the lake which is well worth doing as you can go places not accessible any other way. Don't think it was that expensive either. The boat rental place is on the left by the lake front just before you get to the dam if I remeber correctly.

Me and 4 friends each have a car from the Hertz Adrenalin range booked when we're in Vegas, we're heading out to the Damn for the day then stopping by the Marina on the way back to rent a boat for a couple of hours. A deck boat is $50 per hour
