Without a flight case, no. Almost all the carriers explicitly don't include instruments in their insurance so anything you send will be at your own risk.

Anyone good would be prohibitively expensive, IMO, but if you can put it in a case, I can pass you on a contact who should be able to help?

I sent an ESP without a case through the mail a few years ago. It arrived fine. Just wrap it well with cardboard and bubble-wrap. Also send a Les Paul through the post 20 years ago. In a case this time but still Royal Mail although there weren't so many options then.

I was sent a Les Paul through the post a few weeks ago. Guitar in a box then the bubble wrap outside the box then brown paper. The switch was in a few pieces by the time it got here.
I would suggest either factor in a case or put the bubble wrap around the delicate bits and not on the outside of the box.

I've had a few guitars delivered by couriers like Fedex or UPS, a triangular guitar box with as much bubble wrap as you can get in it will stop the guitar moving around. Put that box inside a larger outer carton and stuff a load more bubble wrap in the gaps. This way, it will be fairly spongey and should shrug off impacts caused by fkwitted courier staff. Of all the guitars I've sent and received, I've never had one damaged in transit.

To get the boxes, go to your local guitar shop, they are always looking to get rid of them. I did my work experience in a guitar shop and the bins were overflowing every single day with all of the inner and outer cartons that we couldn't cram in the basement and forget about.

I recently bought a guitar from GAK, and it was delivered in a large sturdy cardboard box. All there was in the way of packing was a couple of cardboard spacer type jobs that kept the guitar (which was in a gig bag) held in the middle of the box. There must have been a good couple of inches of air space around the guitar. It had survived in perfect condition on its journey from the Korean factory that made it, so I guess a long as there's a decent crumple zone and the box is strong enough it should be ok?

I've just had an Epiphone Explorer GT (for my son) delivered from Andertons.
The actual triangle Epiphone box came in a massive oversized box stuffed full of packing, I was really quote impressed by the effort.

They quote for people like UPS, Fed-Ex etc, have brilliant rates and you can increase the insurance over to suit your own need - I suspect it really shouldn't be any more than £15.

Make sure you go overboard on the packing though.
Nip down to a supermarket and get some boxes from them (ask for empty flower boxes - they're quite a decent size) and use plenty of bubble wrap too. The time and effort spent over packing it properly will save you massive hassle later on!

this, it's exactly how i've done it when selling guitars on ebay in the past. no complaints.
