Does anyone have any recommendations for cycling clubs to join in London?

I've done a bit of cycling in the past, but it's mostly been for specific long-distance stuff. I now quite fancy doing a little more and, who knows, maybe even giving racing a bit of a go. There seem to be quite a few clubs around London, but I've heard mixed things about a number of them. I was wondering whether anyone had any personal recommendations?

No point me suggesting Kingston Wheelers if you are on the Essex border so where in London are you?

That would have been a useful bit of information, wouldn't it! I'm currently living just by Barons Court.

Nowt wrong with Kingston Wheelers then, would take you about 25 mins to get down to the clubrun start point though. But as far as I'm concerned its a club that has got it all.

I ride with them, if you have any specific questions, more than happy to answer them.

Having had a bit of a trawl of their website, sounds like it could be a pretty good bet. Might head down to join up with one of their runs on Sunday (although, looking at the weather, maybe not this Sunday!).

Yeh, best pick a nice day for it.

Not sure on your ability, but its recommended that if you are new then you go on the new person ride as a first off just to get a taste for it. I mean if you're obviously above that then fine, but its been recently where a few people have bitten off a bit more than they can chew and other people have had to help them get home etc smile

But (same can be said of many clubs no doubt) really its a great club to be part of, there is a ride going out nearly every day in the summer, so you can always ride with other people. Also there are rides right the way through from the newbie 40 miler @ 15/16mph right through to 100 mile hard 20mph rides. Also this year there are a lot of us racing, think last year there were less than 10 active racers, this year we have had an influx, and now there are probably 20 people that race often, mostly 3rd and 4th cats, I think myself and a couple of others are the only 2nds, but hopefully that will change.

What are the options on the Sunday?

I don't have a massive amount of experience, and certainly not at peak fitness at the moment, but think I'll probably aim somewhere in the middle. Speed is more likely to be the issue than distance for me, but I don't have a lot to compare myself to. My only real cycling experience has been riding from London to Kenya and then Race Across America last summer as part of a 2-man (sort of) team.

There are usually at least 4 rides going out, there will always be the slower beginners one, but then typically 2 others that are a bit further and hillier at similar pace, then a couple of slightly faster than clubrun pace 17/18mph avg's, and then usually just the one that is classed as the training ride which will typically be 70-100 miles at hard pace, which is usually only a few of us as most are a bit scared by it I think!

Have a look here and you'll see weeks gone by threads where all the rides are discussed then listed out before Sunday so people can pick which to go on - http://www.kingstonwheelers.co.uk/kwccforum/viewfo...

Cool. I'll keep an eye on the weather and that forum for this Sunday. Think I could probably manage the faster ones (not necessarily the full-on training one!) ok, but don't want to make myself look like a tit first time out so will aim slightly low to begin with.

Maybe see you down there sometime. I'll be the one on the weird bike!

Yeh, I'm sure you would be ok.

haha, sounds good! If you pick a sunny day, then expect there to be 100+ people all in that tiny car park in Surbiton!

The Serpentine running club also have a cycling wing, as well as the loons who go swimming in the Serpentine, so might be worth checking them out from Baron's Court.
