Have a small business selling stuff B2B via telesales & catalogues and looking to expand the business.

Now we do not 'hard sell' and as the products are of low value we cannot afford to pay for super sales people. However cold calling to send out a catalogue, following up in a few days, calling a week after because they haven't had the time to look, calling a week later as they are now on holiday, calling another week as they have looked but haven't compared etc etc - seems to work ok hehe

Can anyone suggest what type of staff to get?

I am thinking about an apprentice as the rates of pay look great for us and we can get a few of them calling lots of prospects. We can train them from the start however I can't help thinking it will be a nightmare.

Has anyone taken an apprentice on for a customer facing role (It's the motor trade so they don't need to be perfect just well spoken and polite).

Also would a 16 year old want to do a telesales role? It's a pretty fun office but is it really something they would want to do?

In the past we have tried Monster for some staff and gumtree for others - just not sure whether to go down the apprentice route...

Any suggestions or advice?

Isn't cold calling illegal?

You can only get away with paying minimum wage if you give people commission, otherwise you'll just get monkeys.

Also, unless you're going to train them in some skills, you're not really taking on apprentices per se, are you?

Is it? Been doing it for years!

Well thats what I thought however we have some guy come in as 2 of the boys at work are doing NVQ's in business whilst at work. He keeps asking us to take on someone as an apprentice however it just sounds too good to be true...

Why would ANYONE want to work in telesales! Let alone someone for for £2.60 an hour!

We would however if we did go down that route let them see all aspects of selling within the business. Calling, looking at sales letters, figures, web content, special offers etc... We wouldn't just get them making calls all day every day obviously!

I drifted in telesales. It was a fun office, lots happening and I learnt much in my later teens/early 20's.
I moved over into the supervisor side then a bit of team management and then onto the technology/IT/project side. I now design and sell contact centres, it pays very well and it's interesting.

That's a good reason to get into that business. It's a mature market, it can be a career and even without getting into management roles telesales can pay very well especially in collections.

Time spent writing a good quality 'person specification' and 'job specification' would be time well spent; it may be easier to track down the person and their terms and conditions to meet your needs if you do. From there, identify what you're willing to pay and test your theory of spec v reward. An apprentice type may well then fit the bill, but you may also identify that it might not. Good luck! If you need any support, just give me a shout; it's what I do.

Sound advice - thanks.

Staff issues full stop. Are not a strong point of mine so may take you up on that. How shall I get in touch?
