Connection Times

I'm looking at flying to Las Vegas in the summer and I have a question about connection times. Is an hour and a half enough time to catch a connecting flight? It took me an hour just to get through immigration at LAX in March. I've tried finding flights with a bit more time but either going or coming back I end up with an hour and a half gap between flights, some even have a 55 minute gap which I thought was really pushing it! I know it depends on the airport so my two choices are Wahington or Newark.

Any advice or tips would be great thanks.

When leaving the US, a one and a half hour connection (using the same carrier) is not an issue - it's coming in where the immigration delays occur.
I hope that's the case anyway, as I'm headed over to Paris next week from EWR and have 75 minutes to transfer - though same carrier/terminal and I'm up front, so will be first off the inbound.
