Dumped Mountain Bike

Someone has dumped a decent MB outside my house. I've rang the BiB and have arranged to hand it in (assume i did the right thing as none of the neighbours seemed to care and i didn't want it left outside attracting tea leaves). Any ideas why someone would do this or is it Jubilee related i.e. stolen to get home.

Had the same situation. Really nice Kona left within our close, there for a few days so wheeled it to my garage and rang the police. They asked if there were any postcode details and for a brief description like colour as they would check to see if any reports of it being stolen. They called back and said no reports and would I like to claim it to keep it and almost begged me not to bring it to the station...still in my garage.

This is an alu-frame Specialised. Well i'll take it to station but happy to keep it if they insist .. handy for Wombling in the Common

Have already rode it....problem is I ride it like I stole it......im my mind I see curtains twitching, feel suspicious and then just have to gun it everywhere, only bringing more attention to myself.

If it's a decent bike, I doubt someone would have dumped it per se.

They could have fallen off outside your house and needed to go to hospital and the bike was put up against the fence etc. It could be nicked and dumped but the owner isn't aware yet.

You've reported it so just keep it in your back garden (lock it up maybe?) and see if the owner comes knocking, if so ask him to describe it to prove it's his and if he passes the "test", let him have it back.

Might be worth posting up on a couple of MTB forums, don't go into details of the bike but if someone does contact you ask them for the spec/distinguishing marks etc

Police Stations have 100's of bikes and need to get rid of them - do the right thing, make the phone-call, but dont be surprised if they say . . . keep it!!!

It's now in the hands of the Met - handed it in to the local police community something or another. Btw the grip shifters on the bike were light years ahead of the gears on my crappy old Dawes - and it was a fun riding in the rain!

You are not wrong there, there must be over a hundred at the rear of my local nick, all nicely rusting away!

I had a similar thing recently.

My shop in town has a small rear yard, which is mostly overgrown.

One of the (bloody) neighbours - it's got residential houses either side - moved out, and decided it was ok to throw several bags of rubbish over the fence into my yard. Another item thrown was a bike.

It was a Specialised Hardrock. The frame was in pretty good condition, but it was missing a seat, pedals, and a rear wheel. The rest of the groupset was a bit rusty, and the chain was basically solid. It looked like it had sat in their own garden for years before being dunped in mine.

Local Police looked up the frame number on their stolen database, and said they had no trace. They said, as it was basically scrap, to just get rid of it or do whatever I saw fit.

So I took it home, bought another wheel off ebay for a tenner, and cleaned up / serviced the rest. Soaked the chain in oil for a week, straightened it out, and cleaned the rust off it with a rotary wire brush attachment on my drill.


Bunged on ebay - 100 quid. Nice
