I purchased my 03 996 turbo with Moton Club Sport coilovers and uprated top mounts already fitted 18 months ago now – and while I knew they were the best coilovers for serious fast road/track use I'm now starting to get fed up with the ride quality as the car is my daily to and from work every day. I don't seem to have the best roads in my area either!

When I do get the right road at the right moment....jesus the thing handles like its on rails but I don't plan to do much track days in the car if any to be honest so I'm looking for suggestions and advice on the best coilover which sharpens up the handling but offers a little more comfort over the Motons? Have a budget of £1500 to £2000. Seems KW V1/V3 or Bilstein seem to be favourites?

Also any ideas on the value of my Motons? I think they are lucky to have done 10K and while on a euro road trip I stopped off at the Moton factory in Holland as an O ring had failed so the fronts had the O rings replaced and topped up and everything given the once over, nice helpful guys too! Springs have been replaced from 550lb to 450 lb front and 800 lb to 600 lb at the rear.

Cheers

if you are finding the ride quality too harsh then you need to make sure whatever you next choose has softer springs than those you currently have fitted. moton are no slouch in the shock dept so simply changing brand will not ensure you change it in the way you want it. you will very likely end up with a lesser shock coupled to a spring thats as hard or harder and ride will be even worse.

FWIW you may want to look at getting the motons revalved to run with a softer spring that you have now. theres a wide range of spring options and rates to choose from. H&R and eibach racing being the obvious ones.

stock turbo springs rates are 188lb/in front and 343lb/in rear while GT2 are apparently the 228lb/in front/ 468 lb/in rear (maybe someone with a GT2 can chime in if they have alternative info, my manuals dont list the rates).
without any better info, the GT2 rate would be a good range to aim for initially, its lower than you currently run but not as soft as the turbo stuff. you could always then drop to the turbo rates if you felt you needed softer, the change wouldnt require a further shock revalve, just some other springs.

first point of call would be to talk to moton. you may find that they have enough adjustability to allow you to run springs in the GT2 range without a revalve.

be aware though that comfort doesnt come for free, you will lose some of the directness of the car as roll is introduced. that being said, depending on what geo you run, you may be able to get some of the feel back by sharpening this up in exchange.

out of interest, who changed the springs out to the softer ones? its not beyond the realms of possibility that they didnt do a good job adjusting the motons afterwards and you are riding more on the damper than the softer spring. this never feels nice. you wont be the only one driving a car on expensive shocks that handles worse than one on standard stuff due to the shock settings. how does the car feel if you just wind every setting down to full soft?

Hi,

Thats a good point, never thought of adjusting the dampers to take even softer springs - I assumed that the whole kit was just not suited to daily driving on the whole and add to the fact that O rings were failing ( which isnt an issue for racing/track use as you would be doing frequent checks ) doesnt make the kit easy going on everyday reliability.

A GT2 set up does sound ideal so I will phone tech9 on Monday to discuss options and yes I'm well aware that softer springs or a different package will suffer the handling but its all a balancing act with comfort isnt it?

The softer springs were replaced by previous owner so not sure - but as I say the fronts were off at Motons factory and the whole front and rear given a check over so I'd assume it has been done correctly.

However with GAZ, AP and designtek all doing coilovers for the 911 has anyone any feedback yet of these suppliers over the more expensive KW or Bilstein kits? I believe AP are built int he same factory as KW.

Thanks

I would strongly recommend sticking with the Moton's as they're an excellent damper that can be adjusted to do whatever is required & are way better quality dampers than anything Bilstein or KW can supply. They've got 15 clicks on the bump & rebound settings, so the first thing to try is to wind them all the way to soft and see what that makes the car feel like. If the ride is still too hard for you, you need to look at softer springs, which are around £200 for a set of Eibach springs. I have had the Moton / Eibach combination on my GT3 for the last 40K miles & I can honestly say they ride better than the standard suspension ever did. Get to a track and in 5 minutes you can be in race car mode - truly the best of both worlds.

You may be surprised by how much winding them off softens the ride though. Take note of how many clicks you wind each one off so you will know how much to put them up again if you need to.

Why not give Centre of Gravity a call to discuss options?
