This time last week we were happily driving back from a great trip around Europe. How things can change?

Anyone ever replaced the camshaft bearings? Mine are a nice bronze colour but I think that's because the top bearing layer has worn away. It's on the list of things to sort but they look a bugger to do!

Before someone states the obvious, the bearing in the photo is a big end bearing, not the cam bearing. I am OK with the other stuff but not sure how to tackle the cam bearings.

What's the second picture, a big end shell?

Aren't cam bearings a "specialist job? Special tools to remove and replace and need to be line bored?

Hi Mike.

Don't think they need to be line bored but may have to find someone to replace them. Yes, its a big end bearing. The one furthest away from the oil pump! The crank and cam look OK though. Got a chap looking for bits for me so will see what he can get and will go from there. At least the old motor got us back OK and we did not really hang around so can't complain too much.

If you do need one I think I have a brand new hydraulic lifter cam and followers somewhere.

Cheers Mike. Should be OK as I have already asked someone to source gaskets, followers and a few other bits. Used him before and he was pretty good. If he can't get them I will let you know, but as I have asked him to get them I don't want to mess him about. If I new you had a spares department I would have come to you first. Live and learn I guess.

hell Stew - I've only just finished removing the last of Roger's chocolate bar wrappers from my car and you've already emptied your engine bay!

Sorry to hear about engine woes, but at least the TVR got you back to home. If the cam bearings require line boring you may wish to try Coventry Boring & Metalling:

I used them a couple of years ago to re-face a flywheel at what seemed a reasonable cost.
