Decisions: 996 Turbo S or 997 GT3 MK1 - which one?
Discussion
Guys,
Been thinking of late, I have a 996t and love it to bits but I am racking up the miles as I use it as a daily driver doing about 15,000 miles a year 50/50 urban and motorway. I do about 4 non competitive track days a year. Thinking about what I might get next, for the same money I can buy a low mile 996 Turbo S or a 997 GT3 touring or Clubsport.
So my question is what would you pick given my situation, I fear that the Turbo S will be too much like I have now and no warrant the cost of change, and I feel that the GT3 might be too hard for a daily driver.
So what would you pick and why?

Same annual milage doing it in a GT3 would not be the best.
So upgrading to the Turbo S - well it's a notable amount £ to upgrade you could remap your current car and save a fortune use that to have a a caterham or such like for those track days.
Using a track focused car for daily commuting will not be comfortable and it's not 4x4 so winter driving will be harder.
Or you could buy a 996 GT2...... Best of both worlds different and epically quick on track

Same money? I thought 6TSs were around mid to late 30s, and 7GT3s started at 50.
Not sure I'd want a GT2 or GT3 for the sort of use/mileage you're doing. I think I would look at a 7.1 Turbo.
Yes, a 2005 996 TTS here in Aus is the same money as a 2006 997GT3. 997TTS are an extra $30K.Not sure I'd want a GT2 or GT3 for the sort of use/mileage you're doing. I think I would look at a 7.1 Turbo.
I will most likely end up doing something sensible and buying a E60 5 series or maybe 3 yo Cayman. I've got a bit of time to think about it though.

With that mileage I'd stay away from a GT3 but that's just my opinion.
There is another thread on here about someone buying a 997 Turbo whilst keeping his 996 turbo as well.
Very early impressions are that there's not a massive step between the two.
Performance wise probably, as my 996t is remapped, but the everything is more modern. I couldn't afford both, all or nothing for me.There is another thread on here about someone buying a 997 Turbo whilst keeping his 996 turbo as well.

Sensible choice keep 996tt and keep running it. Buy a kit car a proper weekend track toy or a Tuscan racer or get a Cerbera for track use only. Unless you must have pork?

Always thought buying my 996 Turbo that I'd graduate to a 997 but ended up thinking the extra expense wasn't worth it. Dreamed of having a matching Boxster S to sit in the garage alongside but unfortunately divorce got me and all cars had to go. NBTBRV8 said:

well mate one is a very accomplished & sure footed allrounder which will keep you warping down the highway.. the other is the most utterley compelling & addictive weapon you may ever get your hands on, only to come truly into its own when you leave the pitlane!Been thinking of late, I have a 996t and love it to bits but I am racking up the miles as I use it as a daily driver doing about 15,000 miles a year 50/50 urban and motorway. erics went from 996t to 996tS and reckons the difference between the two is huge. I personally can't see how the difference can be that significant, but I accept he is in a very good position to judge.I think he may also have been in a 996 GT3 before the turbos, so he'd be a good person to ask on the matter.
Cheers.
