Just a quickie...
If I cancel a direct debit with on-line banking does the recipient receive notification of the cancellation?
Or do they find out when they come to collect the money and can't?

TIA

They get a notification telling them it has been cancelled. I usually get a letter from the company letting me know it has been cancelled, just in case it was done accidentally somehow and you end up missing a payment.

I didn't think there was, but it does make sense. Thanks for the info Steve.

Alternatively, if it's Virgin Media, they phone you but won't leave a message on the machine, won't speak to anyone apart from you and won't write "due to data protection" - and in my case over 2 months, charged me 3 x £10 late payment charges, AND 3 x £20 missed paymnet charges.
Got it all back in the end but what a PITA....
