Is there such a thing?

Im looking to take the OH away to probably the Algarve (Lagos) at the beginning of July and it would be nice to rent a villa with a pool instead of staying in a hotel.

Now where do i go about finding such properties and is there a website where you can deal directly with the owners rather than going through an agent to negotiate the best deal?

Please be careful. I booked a villa in February through holiday-rentals.co.uk (Or HomeAway.com as they are otherwise known) and we had major problems.

Have a look here.

We're still trying to get to the bottom of it but doubt we will ever get our money back frown

As it happens, we have now found another villa through the same website (There seems to be no other options other than forums or word of mouth) which seems to be lovely so it's not all bad. Just please be careful how you pay and make sure you have good dialogue with the owner before handing any cash over.

My parents rent their villa out through www.interhome.com - unfortunately the villa isn't in the Algarve tho!

I use www.villarenters.co.uk or www.ownersdirect.co.uk and www.holidaylettings.co.uk.

I prefer the first site as it gives you instant confirmation and will generally charge you about £25 for breakages insurance rather than you having to pay a £200-£300 breakages deposit which is no use when you need the money to spend on holiday. Also saves any arguing later when you want it back though I've never personally had any issues on that score.

Once you find a villa, try to get clues as to where it is and have a nose round the area on Street View on Google Maps as that can save a lot of disappointment.
