Remval and re-fitment of slave cylinder
Discussion
After another few hopeless hours under the car, I have a few questions regarding the slave cylinder.
1) after disconnecting the copper hydraulic pipe, do you remove the nut and bolt of the bracket and take the whole assembly off to remove the 2
bolts holding the slave to said bracket or remove the 2 bolts first?
2) if so, how did you get a spanner or socket on the backs of the bolts to stop them spinning?
3) when re-fitting, do you bolt the slave to the holder and fit as a complete assembly or holder on first the bolt slave to holder ( which then brings me back to question 2!)
4) my holder has a large rubber cover that shields the push rod end from road muck, having pulled this away a bit last night, it seems that it is fitted to the bracket BEFORE it's bolted into place. This has me puzzled, as then you can't see if the end of the pushrod has inserted into the hole of the clutch lever ( sorry don't know the correct term!)
Been reading all the posts I can on the subject, but either I'm thick or you guys are all mechanics, as it seems an easy job!!
I love tinkering and don't want to give in, so any help, idiots advice greatly appreciated, Mark

I cant be much help with this unfortunately as I don't know much about the ford set up but I'll try what I can.
Sometimes for awkwardly placed bolts s-shaped spanners can help with access. You may be able to fit one of these up to the top bolt to be able to gain leverage in addition to wobble extension bar on the socket. This way you may be able to only remove the slave from the bracket from having had a look at a couple of the photos posted earlier.

Some of the time it is just luck that you have the correct tool lying around that just fits which can make the job seem easy. If I can't seem to manage something, I always try and come back to it the following day. Sometimes I've missed something that makes it so much easier than the way I was trying to do it the first time round!!

Thanks Gordon, thanks for your reply. Never thought of those. I'm like you, have a think or mostly post in here and come back to it another day! I'm sure im missing something as I don't see any posts ask such daft questions! I just need a good fellow to post who's done the job before.
Flexi-end ratchet spanners is also a very worthwhile buy. I am also changing my slave cylinder soon and had a look at the weekend to check out what I needed. Not much room but I recon you can take off the whole assembly or just the slave. I will probably just take off the slave using an S spanner and flexi-head ratchet. I don't have the rubber boot.
I always work on the premise that if I need tools to do a job, I go and buy them out of the money I am saving by doing the job myself.
Rob.

Thanks Rob, I'm also the same, always good to get some new tools in. The trouble you run in to, even with an S spanner is you cant seem to get the spanner on the bolt head as the bracket design gets in the way? Thats what I found anyway, I just couldn't get a ring spanner in there.

When I took mine off I undid the bracket then undid the slave after clamping the bracket in a vice.
Didn't have a rubber cover on mine though, only the rubber cover on the slave which doesn't get in the way of any of the bolts.
I found that refitting bracket (with new slave attached) was easy as it slotted into place and the bolt located easily. Getting the new brake pipe to fit into the slave was a different matter altogether though! I would suggest slotting the pip down and hooking it up loosely first then bolting the bracket back on. Should work better than swearing loudly!
