Being taken for a schmuck in work?
Discussion
Late yesterday afternoon I realised that one of our suppliers had colluded with a contractor we use to hide the fact that his product was out of specification which would have cost him £1000. Seriously pissed me off that the contractor, who runs a large business, would do this as I can imagine his reaction if someone did it to him. Feel like I was taken for a schmuck and they probably would have got away with it if it werent for the fact that random testing was carried out on that day.
This has been playing on my mind all night, I've been awake since 4, and it's crossed my mind to take the easy way out and ignore it this instance or just tell the supplier that I know what went on and not to f
k us over again! My loyalty has to lie with my employer though and I don't get paid to take the easy way out! So I am reporting this to my manager first thing and going to sit back and wait for the s
t to hit the fan! If they've done it once, they'll do it again, so it's much easier to end this now and show that I can see past my nose and not prepared to be bulls***ed to. This was stressing me out last night and I was dreading going in today but I'm just eager for 8am to come so I can get it over with.
Anyone else had this sort of situation arise in work?

Well I went in this morning and showed him everything I had and he doesn't know how to approach it without coming straight out and calling them liars. My boss definitely isnt involved, though I can see this being ignored but I'll be watching this guy like a hawk. At least my conscience is clear.
I can;t fully picture your setup with supplier/contractor/your company, but if I were you/your boss I would now insist if possible that any quote/invoice/contract specified the standards/specs that you require, and that any parts and labour costs in investigating/replacing historic substandard products will be met by the supplier/contractor.
I may be a bit old and cynical, but in business I trust no one to do what they say they can do, until they can prove it's been done.
Once they can prove a good track record, the trust goes as far, as random sampling.
If the random sample proves to be a problem, we ask them politely to a) tell us what went wrong, and why.
b) check or replace all stock since our last random sample, c) Put a corrective action plan in place so it NEVER happens again.
and then we go back to 100% checks but at their cost, whilst starting to look for potential new partners.
And that's the word I was looking for Partner. Does the supplier care about your business?
We never say anyone was lying, or that they tried to pull the wool over our eyes, we just keep to the facts. They supplied something that didn't meet spec, and we'd like confidence that it's a one off.
I've been at the other end of the s
t hitting fan balls up.
I was involved in a recall of a product we screwed up for a major manufacturer in the North Midlands. Due to a f
k up on my assembly line, because of 3 different none adherence to procedures by 7 different people. if one of them had NOT taken a short cut and done the job correctly
We had to carefully manage the 'story' because initially it looked like the recall would have cost millions. We never lied, but worked very hard to regain the trust, by total honesty, and prove that it was a 2 week window, which would never happen again.

I don't feel comfortable divulging a lot of information as it's far too easy to track people down on the net. We purchase a product and the amount we pay depends on the spec of the product. We have safeguards and penalties in place to ensure that the product is up to standard. The issue is that one of our suppliers got a major contractor, who he is friends with, make an employee intefere with a piece of equipment because his product was out of spec. The contractor called me to tell me there had been a fault with the piece of equipment and that I should ignore the default reading that was then given.

Good. Now make sure your arse is covered by starting a paper trail that proves you discovered and took appropriate action by bringing the problem to the attention of your boss in a timely manner. You never know when a quick 5 line email will save your job/career.
