Instagram - Work of the devil?

Or a simple and fantastic way of creating eye catching images?

My dSLR is being sadly underused and my iPhone has far too many, yet (mostly ) well-taken pictures on it, having finally discovered Instagram I am creating images which are eye-catching, make me smile when I look back at them and will hopefully re-spark my dSLR use.

My only real gripe is the quality when viewed on a normal computer screen they are not nearly as punchy as when viewed on the iPhone.

being very new to photography and photo editing etc. i love instagram and my dslr, what i would really love is some instagram style filters for photoshop or lightroom.

I take pictures with a film SLR. It makes everything look like instagram.

I've seen some lovely photos from people on Facebook but it's a bit odd. It's a bit like adding vinyl crackle to mp3s.

I do wonder how Instagram photos will be explained when looking back at them in years to come.
"Oy grandchild, look at this. I took these photos on a state of the art phone from 2012, then intentionally made them look like they were taken in 1975."

Ahh, the hyperreality of a glossy screen. If only real life was so dynamic!

IMHO Get out and take decent images. In 200 years (if the meteor missed), they'll want accurate records of life on earth, not cheap tricks.

I guess it's all about instant gratification for minimal effort. Then three seconds later it's forgotten when the next text arrives... everyone has the attention span of a fruit-fly now.

Can't say it's wrong, just different.

Hmm.

Mostly negative opinions then it seems, I have to say I enjoy a lot of the pictures both that I've taken and that I've browsed through the app, I shall have to post up a couple of little 'mini series' that I've taken with it.

I'd had a vague idea of a mini story based on a day out on the bike before but never got round to realising it, one day near the end of a long ride I started snapping away with the iPhone and ^^^^^^^ that was the result, pretty happy with it and it certainly conveys what I had in my head, not sure if purely traditional photography would allow that.

The amusing thing is that if you'd taken those photos a few years ago, people would say 'the colours are wrong, the edges are blurry and vignetted - did you shoot them through a milkbottle?' Fashion is a funny thing - but the main thing is to do stuff you like. If you're doing it for fun and you like them, nobody else's view really matters
