hypothetically you have 10k which you were going to spend on a car in 6-12 months so quick access is a necessity

the cash is currently sat in a savings account gaining very little., where would you put the cash?

could a Greek default/Euro exit, Spanish bank collapse trigger another bull run on gold or play it safe and leave it where it is?

Keep it in the bank would be my suggestion - 6 months is too short term to invest it IMO smile

If you need the money in 6 months keep it in the bank.

There is no free money to be had speculating on the Eurozone.

Probably this as you're only risking the little bit of interest your savings account was going to pay but you could get lucky.

Remember that you don't get entered in the draw immediately. So if you buy in May you aren't in the June draw, you would start in July, which cuts it's effectiveness in the short term.

...or just use the interest every month to buy a couple of lottery tickets if you really want to.

Premium Bonds (in my experience) are a PITA to buy and cash in. Over 6 months it isn't worth the agro.

The options below are, IMHO, the equivalent of going to the casino.
You may win big, but the odds are stacked against the average player smile

There are some savings accounts paying circa 3%.

Instant access and as said you could just stick the interest into lottery / scratch cards. You've probably got as much luck doing this as you have at winning anything decent on premium bonds. 1 year could give you a few hundred £ in interest in a standard savings account.

Premium bonds or just buy the car early, why wait 6 - 12 months.

I've recently bought PB in several different transactions, and I just login online to NS&I, enter my debit card details & amount and job done. The money leaves my account a day or so later and I get an e-mail confirmin that the bonds have been purchased.

I've not sold any bonds yet but presume that it will be the same quick and easy process as for buying.

This one? http://www.bloomberg.com/quote/XEL:US

I said the same about McDermott (MDR) before they won US$2.5bn worth of work in Asia... The shares have actually fallen quite dramatically frown

Whether they fall or not does not matter, as long as you know why they have fallen that counts! XEL has fallen from a spiked high of £4+ to around a paltry .89p, as it turned down you sell ,then you buy back in for 40% more shares @ a near300% discount so all free shares, but as i said I knowing why & when the upturn"may" happen is another thing entirely! The reason this is down is a company that lent them £50 million will be entitled to 6 million free shares if the price stays below a certain level coninuosly for 20 days, add to that the euro crisis which affects most company funding/investments & you have a .89 - .92 share price. Take as a step back & you will see that the company have already found a core 116mbls have flowed it & within the next few weeks will be fining off a EWT which will lead them to getting the RBL & this will be flying @ over £2 per share with ease. After September it will more than likely fall back for around a year, so sell in August & buy back in October & wait for the next 4 years!! 400%

Or as some are doing leaving it in (I will leave 50% in) & wait for a takeover from a larger oily, could well happen @ £6 up to £10 .

Its not a problem if the shareprice bombs its an opportunity!

Anyway there are loads of good companys to invest in its just a case of study.

OP if you drop me a e mail I will send you a good PDF file on finace etc that may help , you have to understand WHAT YOU ARE DOING BEFORE YOU CAN PUT YOUR MONEY INTO ANYTHING, THIS MAY HELP.;)

I love it when all the gamblers pedal the exploratory oil firms all over the internet.

Peer to peer lending isn't discussed much on here but it's worth a punt.

The 1 year fixed is quite low at the moment but I'd wait until it picks up to around 5.3%, which it will.
I'm on a 4.2% monthly access rate for my lendings but that's because I started in January.

Read the contingency fund info which pays out in case of a default.

I find this very interesting. This is the first I have heard of this service. Has anyone got any real world examples from a lending point of view?
