OK all the ususals, worn this, shiney that but how easy is it to get a DME printout with the hours run? Is that too subject to tampering? What is the simplistic correlation between hours runa nd miles?

Thanks

Miles divided by hours = miles per hour.

Be suspicious of an average much above or below 30mph.

hehe

I'll not tell you the average for the 968 since January then. It is less than the NSL though...

Based on that rule of thumb I am going to well and truly ed when I come to sell the car on :-)

If you have the right bit of kit to plug into the car you can read the ECU / reset error codes / enable options I beleive. I did look into it and I think I found one for about £300.

Durametric. Well worth having in my opinion.

It's simples, if the service has been done by an OPC and therefore the booked stamped then they will check the ECU so will Know if it's been tampered with.
So the question is has it been serviced properly and an OPC been used...

My OPC had trouble checking the oil level after a service, never mind investigating the ECU !

That kind of mileage is not unheard of (I recently dealt with a 2006 C4S with 12k on it from new). You can check all the MOTs online free www.motinfo.gov.uk and the DME reading will tell you actual kilometres (AFAIK the car's computers do everything in kms and just convert to miles for the display) and hours run.

20mph average for a car used in traffic is not unusual and I've had one with 55mph average that was used for long distance commuting, so I'd disagree with the 30mph suggestion. The display can be clocked but not the DME - so if it checks out (along with the MOTs and history) then you can be certain (as you ever can with any used car) that it's accurate.

What is suspicious about it being much above 30mph? No-one would clock it forwards LOL - just would mean it has been used on A-roads motorways more than in traffic wouldn't it?

In terms of average speed take everything as you find it. Sometimes the average speed will be low and the car has done loads of work, other times it will be high and the car will have done relatively little work for it's miles.

There are 2 mileage locations which you check and it is the difference between them (and there will be a difference, that's quite normal) which gives rise for concern.

The average speed is something you look at but not in isolation.

The problem with service records (I'm not aware the main dealers specifically look for signs of mileage discrepancy during the services) and Mot's is that the bulk of 996 and 997 clocking we see doesn't involve 90k back down to 40k when the car is 6 years old, it involves quite small amounts early in the cars life. 40k down to 25k makes a big difference to the value on a 2 year old car which won't have been Mot'd and it also negates the expense of having to shell out for a major service.

OPC can give you an hours reading during the 111 point check. Mine had done 1650 hrs @46500 miles, which is a tad below 30mph.

I am afraid that the DME can also be messed with! Nothing is safe anymore.

If it is a facelift car, with DME7.8, the mileage is recorded in the DME, as well as the operating hours. If it has been clocked, it is more unlikely that it will have been adjusted in the DME (but as Mike says, not impossible). The instrument cluster and DME mileage will be up to about 10% different, as the cluster over-reads.

Another thing to look for is the operating hours recorded in the airbag module. It will be different to the DME, but not a huge amount. Of course, it may have had an airbag module changed, but it is unlikely.

Both can be read with a PST2 or PIWIS tester. I don't think Durametric will show DME mileage.

With any car over 3 years you have the MOT which is a factual milage reading at that date every year (could be clocked every year of course).

If your car is serviced by main dealers they will have an official log of what milage it was showing on x date useful if it doesn't match up with the MOT milage.

Or buy a higher milage car which will not have been clocked for obvious reasons.

Best route but from a friend or family owner from new or MTFU and buy it new then you know for sure that's part of the pleasure of buying new.
