If you had a 997 GT3 Gen 1, which you were going to keep and mod. Would it be possible to change the rear arches to the RS ones? (I know financially better to just buy RS)

iirc on my C4S the arches are separate body parts so in theory could be done?

It is possible - but its a mammoth task, and very intricate.

Question is - Why??

I cant see any logic in taking this on. Massive cost and hassle, reduced value and its still not an RS.

Like you say, just sell up and buy an RS.

Have a mate who is in love and attached with his GT3, bought it new and has owned for four years and does not want to ever sell. Even though he has more serious machinary he wants to mod his first GT3 and we were discussing this as an idea today.

I know the said mate "Beavis" I think Beavis is smoking something..

Beavis should sell both cars, buy a 3.8 Gen 2 RS and be happy.

correct if wrong, but all you need are the rear quarter panels, bumper, and more aggressive rear wheel spacers right? what's so intricate aboutthis?

But the rear quarter panel runs over the roof and back down the A pillar. Big job surely.

Did RUF not do some bolt-on wide body panels for the 996?

You have to cut the existing arches off, and then line up and attach new arches on, these go up higher than you think.

Then different liners, wider track, has to be perfectly smoothed then painted.

I wouldnt want to chop up a 1 owner GT3....

Beavis could consider the RS-Tuning 4.3 conversion. 545 bhp....

I just don't get why people want to butcher cars like this? They never look quite right, it devalues the car, hurts resale and it's one less standard example of a relatively rare car for the future market place.

Keep them standard, if you want a widebody, buy a widebody.

I've a GT3 since new , collected at the factory and kinda understand the OP s position. It makes NO commercial sence but its his car, he intends to keep it and he understands the financial loss so let him do it. For the same reasons I considered changing mine to LHD, no sense money wise but I want to keep MY car.

dont see what the big deal is, a decent bodyshop could do it for £5-10k i bet, can't see how it wouldn't look right, it'd look exactly the same as any other widebody 997 surely...

i've spent more modding my XR4i that it cost new to buy, in fact probably twice as much... doesn't make any financial sense.. nore does buying and running many cars, let alone modding!

I don't see what the problem would be. Ignore all the people who say it devalues it, if the cars a keeper it doesn't matter.

On the other side I can't really see the benefits of going wide body unless you want to race it and get the widest wheels/tyres possible under the arches.

a descent body shop would be able to do it so no one would know the difference.

Would you take a '70's Carrera RS and chop it about? No, daft idea, so's yours! The GT3 is about the only 996 that's keeping it's value above water, 997's will be the same, lovely car, it'd be a travesty to start messing with it in my opinion.

replacing quarters properly involves interface with the roof, sils, door closing panels, engine compartment, rear side windows. If it's not done professionally it's a nightmare. I did it on a 911 T years ago, not for modding but due to tinworm. You could spend far more than has been suggested on here and still end up with a 'mollested' car for sale when you want to sell.........sell and buy the pucker deal......
