The GPS tracking itself doesn't involve any data useage. I use Endomondo and you can be followed live so I guess it uploads info every 30s or so, but all it needs to do is send your co-ordinates (a few bytes) and the website can then do the rest?

Before I got a garmin I used it twice daily for an hour each time 4/5 times a week and I never got close to my 500meg limit.

I also did the odd 4 hour ride which would run the battery flat and it was still fine.

I track myself using memory map on an old PDA, then upload the data to the strava website through my PC when I get home. Its a little bit more of a faff on compared to the strava app but I dont have an android phone and have a load of memory maps so it works for me.

Anyway, the file of my tracked route in GPX format, basically a bunch of gps position data, is usually only about 60kb so I'd imagine that what you actually upload to strava will be about this size for each ride.

The actual tracking of the ride will be done using GPS and shouldn't use any data

Just don't trust its top speed tracking. It said I was doing 69.6 kmh yesterday... rofl

Downhill? Or... 43mph downhill isn't unreasonable?

Hmmm... Having done the maths, 43mph equates to roughly 120rpm on my 50x11 top gear. Not impossible I guess.

Don't know about speed, but certainly don't trust the vertical information from the phone.

Someone clearly set a segment up from phone data outside Chessington World of Adventures. There is no other explanation for this basically flat road showing as a 25% incline on Strava.

If you were going down a sharp hill then it's easily possible. If it wasn't and
You weren't sprinting for village sign then it's probs wrong wink

There are a few of those segments around, according to Strava there is a Cat3 climb on a gentle downhill in the middle of Windsor, and a Cat4 in the middle of a housing estate in Bracknell!!

I use it and whilst I like it, you have to take it with a pinch of salt! I did a ride with three others, two using iPhones and two using HTC Desire and we all got wildly different results, my brother climbed 700ft more than I did...on a canal towpath!

Your phone is not an accurate altimeter. Strava will use topographical data from their maps provider to work out the ascent/descent over your ride or segment. This isn't perfect either, but generally better than your phone/GPS will give. They also apply smoothing algorithms to lessen the impact of glitches in the data.

The exception is for devices containing a barometric altimeter such as the Garmin Edge GPS units (not including the 200.)

I too am loving the Strava - although I have only managed to get into the top 10 on a couple of segments. It makes a ride into a real challenge!

yes

Even I hold one! It's a potholed track which has been ridden by about 8 people.

I did once manage a top 10 on a short, slightly downhill segment on Clapham common, but that was more because I absolutely nailed the lights.

Strava is starting to gather momentum now, and some people that are pretty decent are using it, along with a fair few pro riders.

I've got a few KOM's, one of which has been ridden over 3000 times, which is quite a lot. But usually I'll go on a ride to back of beyond with some of the guys, get a load of KOM's just because I will upload my ride first, then they will upload and take them off of me as they're quicker up hills!

I had quite a few KOM's and top ten places locally, however recently lots of new people have been appearing - including someone in the Rapha youth team!

I have also noticed quite a few people uploading huge volumes of rides up to a couple of years old after they join up - nothing wrong with that but it is disheartening to go from 4th or 5th to the mid-late 20's in a matter of a week or so!

I have paid for the premium (just for a month) so I can filter against age/weight, which then allows you to at least look at people in roughly the same age bracket. Mind you, that can just make you feel worse ;-)

I have started to use Strava as a way of challenging myself, I have a couple of segments that I am currently trying to better but I won’t lose sleep if I don’t. A couple of months ago I started to get a bit too fixated on always putting in a decent time on segments, before long I was not enjoying my rides!

I have noticed Strava do a few odd things recently. I held a position somewhere in the late 20’s on a long downhill towards Henley with an average over the segment of just under 30mph. I rode it this weekend much slower, and stopped half way down the hill to give directions to a group of walkers who flagged me down, so my overall average for the segment was 19.7 mph. When I uploaded the ride to Strava rather than leaving my previous time/ave speed as my best to date, it took my new reading and dropped me to 185/191! Very odd – just gives me a good reason to go for it the next time I ride the segment!

Never pay for premium.

There are codes about most of the time.

Pishill Descent?

My 23mph doesn't even get me into the top 100. Only ridden it once, mind, so looking forward to going a bit harder next time.

I have a real love/hate relationship with Strava, it seems that whenever I 'go for a segment' I don't do as well as I think I should, however if I ride a segment without knowing it I seem to do OK.

Given that it was so nice out there this evening I decided to get out for a quick spin. I have been off the bike for just over a week due to a bad back, got back in the saddle on Saturday and had an awful ride which really demotivated me. So tonight decided not to go for it but just to keep an average of 18.5mph+, and to make the road conditions work for me.

Planned a reasonable route, mostly flat with a few climbs thrown in but nothing too terrible - spent most of the time just concentrating on keeping the cadence up, and breathing down. Uploaded my ride to Strava expecting nothing more than mediocre at best, but actually managed some of my best times, plus I rode a bunch of segments I didn't know existed and did really well. After my ride on Saturday I was about ready to throw my bike in a hedge and take up knitting, tonight I am quite up for putting lots of miles in this week............

Bloody Strava!!! biggrin
