the idle speed on my 3.2 fluctuates (surges)between 400-1100 rpm when cold and 400-900rpm when warm , sometimes it cuts completly ,this is only when i'm off the throttle.
i don't suppose this is normall, any advice please.

I have a similar problem to this with my 3.2 Carrera... My car doesn't hunt as much as yours sounds, apart from the first few seconds as the revs bounce a bit, but it is prone to stalling when letting the revs drop in traffic etc. and doesn't seem to idle high enough when cold(around 900/1000rpm). I keep meaning to take the car in as it is still under warranty - I think it may be a temp sensor problem, but could be ECU I suppose?

The 3.2 uses a Bosch Motronic Fuel system - most problems should be diagnosable by a good Bosch "Hammer" (Technician) if you are really stumped - Look them up in your Yellow Pages.

First Port of call though, ought to be the Forums at Pelican Parts http://forums.pelicanparts.com/ and Rennlist www.rennlist.org/

Both have great users who will gladly offer advise - it's worth doing a search on your problem first though in each forum - most of these problems have been repeated time after time.

Notorious for 3.2's are DME Relay failure - under the seat - really worth carrying a spare as it will leave you stranded, Cylinder Head Temp Sensor - old ones have one wire, grounding via nut which gets corroded - should be replaced by the updated two wire version ASAP if not already done (otherwise you might find yourself stranded in an Italian Autostrada Tunnel on a corner with no hard shoulder and intercontinental HGV's bearing down on you........)

Also notorious is the slight surging at idle - not a problem I have but one widely observed etc etc etc

Go check them out.

Ps The Bentley Workshop Manual whilst not completely comprehensive is a damn good investment too...... I'll get the ISBN next time I'm near the damn thing

Not missing the elan Steve? Have you told them you make cool carbon fibre parts yet?

not really ,the elan was great but the 911 is twice as good ,although its twice the price so i suppose it should be, the brakes are definatly twice as good,
do i know you, have you had any carbon parts ?

yes, I've just had your dash top. Looks excellent. Gutted to hear that you rate the 911 so much over the elan but like you said,.. the kids hate it in the boot.

Sounds like the ISV needs cleaning.

Does it have a lightened flywheel, or the dual mass job ?

In the UK you could also try ringing up AmD who have a website www.Auto-amd.co.uk.
I am in the south, and have used GT-One in the past, who are Ruf trained technicians.

Cheers,
John (also post to Rennlist as John W mainly on the 993 forum)
