Myself and two mates are planning to head off to the Brecon Beacons for a walking trip next weekend, anybody got any campsite or camping barn recommendations, preferably close to a pub?
Any other recommendations for staying in that area, things to see or do, places to go etc?
Thanks in advance.

If you want camping somewhere with a pub try staying somewhere like Pencelli (off A40) or Talybont on Usk (again off A40). At Talybont there's a few pubs, a shop and cafe, you can walk straight up through amazing scenery and up Pen y Fan. You can also jump straight on the Brecon Canal walk and head to Brecon town if you fancy it. Above one of the pubs there a semi-decent bunkhouse. We had the whole place to ourselves.

Unfortunately most dedicated campsites are in the middle of nowhere with zero facilities and this is exactly how I like it. Usually head for Longtown in blackmountains, rough camp at foot of Pen y Fan or rock up in some farmers field just outside Brecon.

Just join the Para's and you will know the place like the back of your hand in no time.

Perhaps, if you are after a walking holiday with good camping and plenty of pubs you might consider the Gower peninsula?

The walking isn't as difficult/strenuous, but there are some very good pubs scattered about, great coastline that you could cover a good deal of in a few days and the scenery is fantastic.

I just find Brecon a bit plain really, I suppose the views could be described as "breathtaking" but having lived by the coast all my life I don't really find it as enthralling as others do. I'll put it down to personal preference.

Either way, have fun and do have a drive about the place, most of Wales is accessible from Brecon and most of it is worth looking at if it is scenery you are after smile

We started off going back to Snowdonia but one of the lads was keen on Brecon Beacons, never having been before the other two of us agreed. I must admit to wondering if it will be scenic enough, if it's not we won't go back I guess! Sounds like Gower is worth a go at some stage though, I know a chap who has a place there somewhere.
Last one we did was Bodmin Moor (quite plain) & the Cornish Coast (stunning) so I know what you mean.

Thanks, think I'm a little too old for that now! One of the lads is in the RAF if that counts?

Sadly you can't get two MTB's in a 911 so just walking this time.

Anybody got any specific campsite suggestions within easy reach of Pen-y-Fan etc?

How far is easy reach to you? Half hour drive? 10 minute walk?

I would camp in Llangennith then drive up there, especially in a 911, but that may not be quite what you are after smile I suppose it would take about 45 mins an hour to get to the beacons from there.

Can you tell that I love the Gower?

Ah thats a shame! I spent a week staying at http://www.yha.org.uk/hostel/brecon it was lovely, the cooked breakfast was fantastic! We did one days climbing at a quarry, a day mountain biking, a day walking (Fan y big, Corn du etc) and a day kayaking down the Wye. It was fantastic.

ETA: Are you not able to hire bikes?

Sounds great! We have booked a campsite near Brecon, they claim Pen-y-Fan is a 3hr walk from the site so no driving smile
Will do a smallish walk on Friday afternoon after setting up camp then the biggie on Saturday. If we have any energy left on Sunday we'll do another small walk or head off to one of the many visitor attractions in the area.
If it doesn't pi55 down I'll take my D-SLR & hopefully get some decent pics to post up.

Have a look for some of the crash sites while you are there!

The photo should be geotagged.

Yes, it's Pencelli. Looks like a nice site, not the cheapest but hey, £10.75pppn isn't going to break the bank is it!

Good choice for facilities/location. Lets just hope the landlord of the local decides to open the pub, sometimes he can't be bothered. If he isn't open walk along canal to Talybont, there's 3 pubs there. If he is open enjoy the beer garden on the canal. beer

Well we had a fantastic weekend, Pencelli Castle campsite is very good, the pub in the village was open & served nice beer & the food was Ok too. The weather couldn't have been any better.

Did a 6-7ml walk on Friday (I forget where!), 16mls up Pen-y-Fan straight from the campsite on saturday & a short one up Sugar Loaf on Sunday morning to finish the weekend off.

Thinking of taking the OH there in a couple of weeks, no walking I suspect but just to do some sight seeing etc.

Cheers for all the help & advice smile
