One for Berw!

What is teh general opinion on kit cars in Malaysia from a legal standpoint?

Am in the early stages of possibly getting a MEV Exocet for a bit of fun now that i have parking in JB and KL!

It is basically an MX5 without a bodykit! would i be able to keep it road registered or would they get a bit arsey?

Ok the law, (simply put) 'you can not alter any thing with a welding torch'. So you can not build a 7 or any thing on a new chassie.

What about my 7 I here you ask, I registered the old escort in my name and put the chassie plate on the new 7 chassie, I can get third party insurance and tax and never had a problem with the police, but if I was stopped in a road traffic dept block they would not be happy, I only use it on the road to run from the Paddock to Petronas station at Sepang to get gas.

So this means that you can do F40 kits on MR2's etc, and I know for a few of those, ( including a source for the bodies in Malaysia) but they were all registered with the owner before the changes where made to the body, and none of them have been inspected, John you know there is a vast diffrence between what th law says and what the local inspctor thinks it says so no one risks an inspection.

I am thinking about building a 'Porsche Kit' on to a beetle at the moment, as the chassie and engine number stay I think it can be done, but again I'd get the beetle in my name and make the changes and then not get an inspection.

To import a car you need an 'approval permit' (AP) not easy to get, and the car must be a recognised make listed with the Malaysian road dept. not a kit. What about my Sylva I here you ask (again) well that was registered pre IVA in the UK and the UK DVLC registered it as a 'Lotus Sunbeam Sport 2 Seater' on the log book, there was never any such thing, but he car was a Lotus Sunbeam, and that is listed by Malaysia so it was allowed.

If you bring in as a race car any thing goes, and the AP is easy.

You coming up for the MSS on the 26 and 27 of this month at Sepang, should be good

sounds like this falls under the same criteria as the porsche beetle, it uses all the MX5 underpinnings and the engine,

sort of .....

will do a bit more research and digging about, although i notice that MX5's are not that popular, or at least not for sale much!

And MX5 is expensive, you can get a (930) 911 for less than a late 80's Mx5

For some reason, and I assume it is part availabiity, both the MX5 and MR2 cost a fortune in Malaysia, I think people are scared off of 944's and things by percieved high part prices, but japs are seen as affordable.

For that to be true, someone must have been smoking something surely? (And I don't even like 911s!)

you can get a 911 for 50 K, I've never seen an MX 5 for that little money, as i say Malysians are afraid of running cost on a Porsche and the road tax on a 3 liter Porsche would be around 2400Rm while a MX5 would be around 150Rm.

malaysian car economics are great!
I had an MX5 on my malaysian list of cars as well with my UK hat thinking ah cheap japanese and descent handling. Then shocked to find i would be at least 10GBP for an early 90's 1.6. Yet the M535i was half that??? big engine old car bad... big engine new car is Ok though for some reason?! But no self respecting Malaysian would ever let his neighbours know he could afford a newer big engined car.

Although its utterly illegal in Malaysia herr Berw has accrued a number of these.

I never ever did get to see the Silva... go on post a picture please. Shame on me.

Well neither nick nor i will fit in a standard 7... keep telling myself that!

Hows the car going on the new turbo? It looks fantastic, assume you are still twice the BHP/ton of your competition then wink

And Norvis car looks very cool, lucky girl! Has she had any races this year? Hope she is still using it!

I can make that sound like a good deal ....

You can get the Caterham 7 CSV on the road here in singapore .... no one officially imports them but they are type approved - you won't see much change from $280k on the road ( GBP140k)

Your Westie sounds like a veritable bargain now ;-)

I met up with the CEO of the Westfield / DRB HiCOM joint venture when last at Sepang... saw the two examples of the Westfield there when they were going through the road approval. They then came to the track to put it through it's paces. I was signed up to give it a try but the track time just wasn't available sadly.
... have some pictures of them both on my phone somewhere I think. Pretty tidy until one appeared to lose it's steering arm and spun on start/finish straight!
