Abandoned R107 300SL in front of my house

Well, I live in central'ish London and there are many nice cars in the area amongst which are included 4 R107's down my street.
One of these was parked right opposite my flat in October last year and hasn't moved since! Its an F reg 300SL in blue with hardtop and beige interior. Its in ok condition but certainly not pristine, some rust on rear wheel arches etc. Obviously its not going anywhere now as I assume the brakes are seized and the battery dead.
Today I noticed that the tax has run out end of April and I assume that in the not too distance future the permit will expire too. This is obviously not really my business, but its also a shame to think this car may soon be towed away and crushed or whatever it is they do to abandoned cars. I suspect maybe the owner has left the country or passed away.
Is there a way of finding out before the car is taken away? Again, it would be a shame to see a nice classic SL wasted!

It being still insured isn't necessarily a sign its still someone's, could be that, like the parking permit, its just a matter of time before it runs out and expires.

Indeed it is! About 25 steps to the Engineer (which has now changed ownership, alas).I seem to get on well with my local main dealer! I just hate seeing such a lovely old car sat awaiting an unknown fate. Is there a way of tracing the owner through the DVLA?
Even if the engine or gearbox was knackered and it's just been laid up it would be a waste to scrap it. There is always a way of getting it going again.

Yep... with extenuating circumstances the DVLA will release owners details to private individuals such as the OP... I seem to remember that a vehicle being seemingly abandoned outside your property is considering a circumstance where releasing the information is acceptable.Even if the engine or gearbox was knackered and it's just been laid up it would be a waste to scrap it. Nice one, the power of PH strikes again!
I hope this is his and all gets sorted in time. He is lucky there haven't been any parking restrictions 'his' side.

Use the registration plate to obtain the chassis number and then you can obtain the key. A cosy relationship with your dealer may be required. It is not stealing so long as you are willing to give it back when the true owner stakes his claim.
Are you sure? I could think of a few cars I'd love to borrow, that I would be happy to give back if the owner claimed them!

Right, its getting a bit anal now but this might be a clue.
The tax disc holder and the dealer sticker in the back window appear to have "CV" in green letters on them and looking closely one can see similar letters on the front and rear plates.
This green and white logo seemed familiar and I then recalled looking in a Merc Specialists in Swavesey (Nr Cambridge) many years ago called C&V Cars that used to have green letters on a white background as its logo.
Their website has been updated but Google streetview shows the old logo on their premesis.

Their phone number is 01954 230264. Give them a ring Ricc, they may well have the address of the person they sold it to on file or be able to put them in touch with you ....
