There is a nice black 996 GT2 for sale at 911 Virgin at a very decent price. I have a couple of questions :
1: Will 996 GT2 retain their value over the next 4 or 5 years ?
2: Their engine is the same as the 996 turbo so do they require the same maintenance ?
3: Are they so difficult to drive as their widomaker reputation seems to imply especially in the wet ?

I am still looking for a nice 964 turbo but there is nothing on the market I like so i may consider a 996 GT2 instead - I know they are very different cars

1. No I believe over 5 years they'll apprciate a bit. Especially if people like you buy today and hold for years, restricting supply still more.
2. Yes in my experience it's the same service as the turbo. I've not gone through every bill line by line but they seem the same.
3. Absolutely not. The throttle doesn't push itself down, just be a little careful in the wet and when the tyres a cold. When warmed up the feeling of piling on mid/late corner drive in 2nd / 3rd (and orobably 4th if you're braver than me) is epic.

I think the early press car was supposedly a bit hairy in setup but they aren't all like that. It's a GT3 chassis/suspension and people seem to rate GT3 handling.

If you can read EVO magazine's scary car issue from IIRC 2007 I let them use my car inthe feature, they had to conclude actually it wasn't all that scary after all.

I bought the last one 911 Virgin had in. With respct to price I'd be very suprised if they dropped much if any more. If anything they seem to be creeping up.

I've not had it serviced yet, so can't comment here, but with respect to the way they drive, its really all about respect. Take it carefully in the wet, don't bring the turbos in hard and you'll be fine.
Stamp on the throttle in any condtionis and the wheels will spin, unless the tyres are warm. This point on tyre temp is very important. You can set off on a decent day and nail the throttle a couple of miles in, to find the wheels spin and the rear starts snaking about.

You do have to be careful, until all the condtions; road, and tyres are OK then you can make breathtaking progress. But again you can't be daft.

The only other negatives are the fact that front spoiler is very low indeed. Its designed to be easily replaced, but it is a pain. They also drink fuel at an alarming rate and the tank isn't huge.

I had an Exige befroe which is a car in whichyou can use all of the power almost all of the time. The GT2 is the absolute opposite, the windows to use it all are quite rare, but very dramatic when you find them.

I won't keep mine forever, but I'm very glad I bought it, as a lifelong 911 fan

They are not difficult to drive - imo that is a misconception. We have tuned GT2s which put out a lot more hp and still perfectly controllable, even with PSM off.

You just have to show respect, just like any RWD car - far rather be in a GT2 than an M3 without traction control in the wet.

In some respects a GT2 is better than a turbo simply because the turbo inspires more confidence, encourages more speed through the corners, right up to the point when the car finds it's limit, or as in most cases, the car finds the limit of the driver.

I see..just re-checked their site - the one they have at the moment is the slate grey one...the one I had my eye on wink

It isn't black OP, although may look so from the pic! IMO slate is one of the most beautiful 996 colours!

All of the above.
I made the mistake of not warming tyres up, suffice to say it was snaking in 3rd, (sh*t myself to be honest)
Lessons learned on that one.
The performance is mind blowing, i have had a number of 911's 3 of which have been turbo's in different guises including a 996 turbo which i thought was epic performance wise. The GT2 is on a different page even if the figures don't really suggest this, you really have to watch the speedo if you don't want to end up doing porridge.
Service wise same as a 6t, i recently had a run to a mate of mine and averaged 27 mpg, if you light it up all the time then below 20 mpg.
Values will certainly go up in time just due to the rarity of the car and the fact its a GT variant.
Aesthetically i think they are absolutely stunning, a real aggressive look and purposeful

Selling point for me though is you have a supercar which ticks so many boxes, you can can potter about in it or you can launch yourself at the horizon quicker than most cars on the road today.
The one at 911 Virgin is stunning value get it bought and join the fold

Good luck fella.

Re the 964 turbo at Gmund, i contacted them three times through phone calls and e-mail. The first time i talked to someone there he told me the car was probably sold although he was not sure. When I saw that their car was still advertised on their website I contacted them again twice to check whether it was still available. I am still waiting for an answer. This makes me think that the car has been sold and they have not updated their website.

Not sure why the 964 has anything to do with this thread unless i've missed something but for info the car is totally over priced which makes the 911 Virgin car amazingly good value, to think you could buy a GT2 for a price of a 964 turbo is pretty amazing all i can is ssshhhhhh!............don't let the secret out nono

An old 911 with a blower, part of growing up, albeit an icon

A newer turbo, epic performance but not a weekend hoon...........little bit sterile?

The daddy, old school st yourself with modern day ease if required, the ideal weekend hoon. Scary stuff

If I hadn't had bought my 997 gt3 I'd have bought a 996 GT2 for sure.
All I'd say is check for crash damage.
M8 of mine who can drive had one and it excited him so there's no limits to its capabilities.
I can see myself owning one one day

996GT2's are the spiritual successor to the 930 - they are old school hardcore. They look amazing, still drive well if set up correctly, are reliable and with a map little else is quicker - and I mean mega quick. From 80mph and above nothing bar the likes of an M600 in race mode will be quicker. Mid range squirt is phenominal. My advice would be to get one IF it floats your boat. They will doubtless be worth big money in years to come, but unlike a Ferrari or Lambo (or even a GTR for that matter), you can use it for the next 10 years and it won't cost you a fortune. Keep them basically original, get one with buckets and a rear cage. A no brainer really....
Spot on, not bothered about buckets/cage though

Mines in at the OPC having a major service and a fluid change, all for £1K. Plus I have a 991 as a loaner for the 2 days its insmile
(Its not as fast;))
So not bad VFM and exactly the same as the turbo pricewise.
Mines been locked away for 6 months due to other interests so it was really great to take it out, its such a special car even driven slowly.
If the GT2 was a girl it would deffo be Lara Croftsmile
