We had a 7 day Scottish "Hoon" last week with our 55 plate 997 C4s cab, bought with 48k miles on the clock.
1887 totally trouble free miles, 1st stint of 401 miles going up she did over 26 mpg, total trip was 23.6 which included a lot spirited driving on the best roads the Highlands has to offer!
What a car, fantastic seats, no aches or pains over 42 hrs driving, fantastic steering, handling, grip in all conditions, brakes = terrific once properly warm, used no oil and totally practical with more than enough luggage space for 2. Demanding roads at speed really brings these cars to life.
Would a C2s been a more "pure experience", a 997.2, GTS or 991 all costing >twice as much been any more fun, I doubt it.
To anyone thinking of getting an older 911 I'd say don't hesitate. Forget the endless debates about 2 vs 4, cab vs coup, RMS failure, high mileage, resale values and the like.
Find one you like the look of, get it bought and enjoy, and then get off to the Highlands where it can be exercised properly.
