Hi all. I've just bought myself a 996 C4S, on a '52 plate. It's a nice car. There is a receipt for £2890 from Porsche for the supply and fit of sports exhausts. These are not the switchable type, and sound way louder (read - better!!) than the switchable exhausts on my last C4S. Does anyone know if Porsche offer different categories of sports exhausts?? Would there be any peformance gains to be had with exhausts??

As Mr Demon says, no performance gains with a PSE, at least not with current models (Porsche specifically note this in the options blurb). What I don't understand is why they don't design it to release a few more horses. Cost of manufacture would be the same or negligible difference, the gains will never be enough for, say, a Cayman to overlap 911 bhp if the marketing men are concerned about that and it might increase take up rate amongst those who see the current PSE as pointless. (personally, am glad my used Porsche came with one though..)

Odd this one. Porsche only supplies the switchable, factory PSE. I cannot imagine (in the UK at least) an OPC fitting an aftermarket exhaust so what are some of the other possibilites?

1) the PSE cans were supplied, but not fitted, by an OPC. A lot of PSE's were bought and fitted by owners that couldn't be bothered with all the wiring and vacuum lines that were needed to add the switch - hence no switch in your car. Fair play to owners that did this - why buy a superb-sounding exhaust just to switch it off?

2) It may be that a previous owner has also added free-flow cats to the mix to improve performance. This will make the exhaust a LOT louder.

3) Least likely one but.... Porsche changed the spec of the 996 PSE several times. Maybe the version fitted to your car is just louder than the version on your previous car.

This is a pic of the later type PSE with the earlier type inset. The later type re-routes the exhaust gases internally depending on the valves being open/closed whereas with the earlier type, the valves open / close an external bypass pipe just like the so-called 'Gundo hack'.

Hi. The exhausts are definately Porsche, I can tell my the design of the box (having played about with many in the past!), and the part numbers match the receipts and look original. They don't have any external pipes like the "normal" PSE, so I'm kind of puzzled! I hadn't thought about free flow cats though, that would offer a good explanation, I'll have to check on this!!

Is it for the exhaust or the exhaust manifolds as the x51 manifolds are described as sports and do add bhp, just a thought.
