Mobile Communication (Compatibility of Bluetooth® mobile phones with PCM/CDR-31 in the Cayenne models)
It looks like when I specced my 981 I may have wasted £526 as reading the Bluetooth guide for the Cayenne (which I assume is the same as the new 991/981 PCM) there is bluetooth support as standard in the PCM. I only specced the Phone Module option as I understood it was needed for bluetooth support of my iPhone but I no longer think that is the case.

The pdf talks about "the Bluetooth® hands-free phone interface (standard)" and compares it's functionality with the phone module option.

Without the phone option module it lists the PCM as supporting:

Porsche said:
The Bluetooth® hands-free phone interface (standard) in the PCM supports the following functions in principle:
– Pairing a mobile phone with search from the car or the phone
– Automatically connecting a paired device after system startup
– Basic phone functions (making, receiving and ending calls)
– Hands-free capability via the in-car audio system
– Status displays such as network name and signal strength
– Transferring phone book contacts from the mobile phone
– Transferring call lists from the mobile phone
– Sending DTMF tones
– Starting and ending a second call, call transfer and conference call
It then talks about the differences between the standard bluetooth and the phone module equipped PCM. It seems the basic difference is that only the Phone Module option supports the SIM Access Profile, but since iphones and android phones don't support SAP this seems to be of no value to the large number of users of those phones.

What are the differences between the PCM with Telephone Module (option 9W1) and the Bluetooth® hands-free phone interface (standard)?
The PCM with Telephone Module (option 9W1) is an integrated car-phone that requires a SIM card in order to make and receive calls. This SIM card can either be inserted directly into the PCM or accessed on a compatible mobile phone using the Bluetooth® SIM Access Profile. In addition, the new 2011 Cayenne features all the functions of the Bluetooth® hands-free phone interface (standard) integrated into the PCM with Telephone Module.

The full range of functions as detailed below, however, can only be used with phones which are connected to the PCM via the SIM Access Profile.
Then it goes on to list the Phone Module as adding:

Porsche said:
The PCM with Telephone Module supports the following functions in principle:
– Pairing a Bluetooth® SIM Access Profile-enabled mobile phone with search from the car
– Transferring phone book contacts from the mobile phone (contacts on the SIM card and address book contacts from the device) or from the inserted SIM card
– Using a cordless handset to conduct conversations in private mode (option 9ZP, not in HFP mode)
– Using Bluetooth® headsets (not in HFP mode)
– Sending and receiving text messages (not in HFP mode)
With little prospect of Apple ever adding SAP to the iphone it seems I will get no benefit for the £526 spent.

If this is true it may change the balance of deciding to go for PCM for those who add the Phone Prep but not PCM, as it effectively reduces the extra cost for PCM by the cost of the apparently included standard bluetooth Hands Free support. So the cost of the PCM is for the Sat Nav, iPod and USB interface but also the Hands Free bluetooth support.

Cheers,

Geoff (slightly peeved!)

Hi Geoff

You might well be right. The CDR31 and PCM might have Bluetooth as std according to the manuals online. HOWEVER it might be that it just refers to cars for the USA. Interestingly in the USA Bluetooth is listed as a standard feature (go to the configurator, start to configure a Boxster and then click on the std features). In Europe the Bluetooth disapears.

I'll drop an email to the product manager who showed the improved iphone integration with CDR. Didnt ask if Bluetooth was std in there.

I thought you had to add a preparation for mobile option for the phone and the telephone module was only about £90 more

Wasn't aware that PCM had phone as standard.

I'm not convinced it is. Nothing on Porsche European sites show it as std just in the USA and the online manual which might refer to the USA not Europe. Hoping I am wrong as I could save £500.

Strangely, I'm hoping you are right, then I wouldn't feel like I had wasted £526! confused

Actually, it looks like you are correct, as I have dug around the UK web site and the same document there says:

PorscheUK said:
Requirements for the PCM
– The PCM must be specified with either
‘preparation for mobile phone’ or ‘telephone module’.
Looks like I got hold of a non-UK document and jumped to the wrong conclusions, so apologies if I have misled anyone.

I can't help thinking that this is how it should be in all Porsche's markets ..

Geoff
