Which Port for £70?

Its my grandfathers 80th in a couple of weeks and I know he is a fan of port, but Ive no idea what is a good buy in this budget?

Can anyone recommend one at all please?

Do you know which port he likes? (Dover,Calais ) or drinks.
I'm guessing if he's 80 he served in the forces? Which one?

Unfortunately no idea which he drinks now, my Gran gave the suggestion but not much more info!

The national service he was called up for is a touchy subject as he saw it as a complete waste of time!

Looking online, is it just best to go for the highest /100 score or much more to it than that?

Port is about buying the right year that is drinking well now....basically the right vintages for now are those from the late 70's or early 80's. Port doesn't declare a vintage every year like wine though...only when it's decent.

You need to buy from a decent wine merchant though as however good the port can be corked and thus off.....and you can't tell til you've got the seal off. A good merchant will change it for you though.

You could do a lot worse than ringing someone like Berry Bros....I know they have a lot more single bottles of Port in their shop than they have online. If you work in London you could just pop in.

I had thought if grandad was in the forces you may have been able to buy a bottle of Port affiliated to them.
