Prog rock fans?

Any prog rock fans on PH?

I'm a bit young to have experinced it, but going through the greats really makes me wish there are more progressive bands around now, I know there are a few, but they tend to just be copy cat bands of the greats.

Currently listening to early ELP, Tarkus is amazing. Gentle Giant are another favorate, Octopus and three friends are some serious albums.

As a rule I don't like prog, but Aphrodite's Child's The Four Horsemen is brilliant

That whole 666 album by Aphrodite's Child is just insane genius.
There are still plenty of "prog" bands around, but things have gone a little heavier these days. In my opinion the best band of now are Dream Theater.

I am currently listening to The Mars Volta - Noctourniquet - absolutely fantastic - like all of their music it takes a few plays but I cannot recommend this enough!

Currently listening to Russia on Ice by Porcupine Tree (from the XM/XMII albums)

Big fan of Rush, Floyd, Tull etc etc.

I like quite a few of the modern prog bands. The latest It Bites album (last month) is my current fave. And I liked last year's Yes album too.

For me it can be a bit too self indulgent for alot of it but a mate has intoduced me to some gems from King Crimson, Gentle Giant, Yes, early Genesis amongst others.

Pink Floyd, early Genesis, King Crimson, Marillion, Rush, ELP, Focus, Caravan, etc.

But there are loads of guys around now doing it:

Arena, Porcupine Tree, IQ, Pendragon, Pineapple Thief, Dream Theater, Spock's Beard, etc.

The Enid! Bloody hell, I saw them back in 1977 at The Reading Festival (I think; memory's a little hazy...). This was just as punk was getting big, and much of the crowd didn't know how to take them.

As for prog, there's never been so much choice. Classic Rock magazine even have a sister title out dedicated to it ('Prog', funnily enough). Some highlights from recent past that come to mind; those above from NiceCupOfTea, plus Transatlantic (prog supergroup; The Whirlwind is worth a whirl), Threshold, Russian Circles, last Opeth album, Oceansize, Hakken and many more. Use Spotify; it'll recommend some artists based on your choices.

Have you heard Diagonal, quite good. Ozeric tentacles do some good stuff as well.

I'm not in a band - I'm a freelance horn player! They had a full brass section for that gig, dry run for a gig with full orchestra later in the year IIRC.

Another addition for Modern Prog bands to check out is Phideaux, especially the albums Doomsday Afternoon, Number 7 and Snowtorch.

They are very good!

..and have a look at Amplifier. They releases a double album last year called The Octopus that was well-reviewed.

No-one has mentioned Pure Reason Revolution. They split up last year but they were pretty good.

Pure Reason Revolution's first album was stunning, but I didn't like the way they went with the second. Shame they've split though.

Yeah lot of the rise above record stuff is pretty throw back.

Listen to Sheavy for the best ozzy impression ever- sounds just like him.

Not so much in the traditional sense, but more "contemporary" prog like Porcupine Tree, Oceansize and Karnivool, is sweeeeeeet.

Oh I listened to hours and hours of it back in the day.

It never leaves you and just sounds better now than it did then.

ELP's triple live is a must listen and I have never stopped listening to Genesis but not after Then There Were Three.

Even tried some Tangerine Dream recently! Not quite sure about them though.

Not sure I'd call Rush Prog Rock although some elements fit the bill perfectly to be fair.

I've not listened to any of this new fangled wave of prog rock....i'll have to give it a go.
