Well I asked on here a few weeks back if by the pic supplied if my mounts were shot. The general concensus was in the affirmative.

I was having trouble with my clutch takeup and spent half the time bunny hopping when trying to get a clean get away from 1st into 2nd, further the change was not how I hoped and was quite baulky.

I thought I'd share the results. Positive or negative.

Well Saturday I replaced them and at the same time cleaned the ISV.

I'm not one for expecting instant results, from past history most of the time I change something hoping for the better it mainly never works (or is worse) so I was expecting little change (if any) after replacing the mounts.

Results? Absolutly fab, I cannot believe replacing these could make such a difference to clutch pick up, I can now actually get a decent start from the line and am amazed at how much easier my car is to drive. I could tell the difference just pulling her out of the garage. Further the gear change from 1st to 2nd (especially when warm) is alot better. You still have to be a little gentle when shes cold but even so it must have improved it 5 fold.

But it doesn't finish there, the whole of the rear end of the car feels so much more together, it actually feels like I have replaced every suspension bush on the back end. Where I used to have the occasional knocking from the rear, now not a murmur and the car just feels so much tighter. I just hadn't expected to feel a differnce here. You can also see how much higher the engine sits by the exhaust tips. I'm guessing my engine is at least 10MM higher than it was.

I'm pretty poor with a set of spanners, but the job was easy and took around 2 hours. I went for the C4 mounts for two reasons, 1, it seems they are a little firmer and a good upgrade, and 2, they are half the price. Just one thing to note, the access holes I managed to elongate a little removing the old mounts as they didn't quite line up with the mount bolts, this has mean't I cannot get the blanking plates to refit. Small issue that I will resolve.

In conclusion, like I stated earlier I am not the type of person who imagines that anything I do will improve my car, but in this instance if your mounts have never been replaced and you have issues with clutch/gear change or maybe the rear feels a little wayward this is something you should seriously consider. I cannot comment on if the C4 mounts are better than if I had replaced with the C2 ones, bit I have not noticed any extra noise etc in the cabin.

Ref the ISV ..... (other than dropping my screwdriver down the back of the engine which took a while to find) this is an easy job (well at least on a pre varioram). Where before the car hunted whilst idling from cold and what a total pain when reversing (reving again up and down) she now sits there ticking over nicely and reversing is how it should be. Brake cleaner and an air line to clean ..... simples.

Thanks to the Jackal and his great site for the info I gleamed from it. Right what next needs doing. biggrin

Good write up thanks - I've had new engine mounts sat on the shelf in the garage for the last year, you've reminded me why I need to get round to the fitting them (to my 996).
