Help with Porsche Approved Used Car and Warranty
Discussion
Just wanted some opinions.
Bought a 996 from a main dealer. 2 years warranty for piece of mind.
Very happy, great service so far.
Noticed the CD changer wasn't working so would take car to have that sorted. It's one hour to the dealer, bring it along they say. I advised a slight knock on releasing the clutch - they tell me they need to investigate further.
The car has now been with them for two weeks and they have had permission from Germany to order and fit a new gearbox. I guess I'm glad I had a main dealer warranty. Happy, but it does kind of undermine the 111 point check? Thoughts?
Today they have called and advised it might be worth putting in a new clutch. Although the car has always been serviced at this main dealer, they won't show me the records but say they cannot see a record of a new clutch. The car has done 68,000. They will supply with a 15% discount and there will be no labour charge? Thoughts?
I've also mentioned some bubbling on one of the roof rails, which as the car is with them for 3 weeks they could repaint/sort in some way but they say that the Sales Manager doesn't feel it comes under their used car prep and as it isn't metal it doesn't come under the 10 year anti-perf warranty. It isn't a big deal but where would this leave me on this?
Considering I bought the car on the 10th Feb is this what you might expect?
I'm not saying I am unhappy and to be honest I find people slagging of dealers all the time quite tedious. I have a couple of other older porsches so know plenty of good indies so am not adverse to using them but decided to keep in the network on this occasion.
The 991 I've been loaned is fantastic too!

Is the clutch slipping? What percent worn is it?
As for bubbling on roof ask them if they can put in a goodwill claim with GB on basis car has full history and you bought it from them recently.
Not sure if 111 pint check covers gearbox, would be crazy if it didn't, but seems odd it wasn't picked up or found earlier. Unless they wanted you to claim under warranty...

Thanks Sonny.
Clutch seems fine they are just suggesting as a precaution. They haven't given me a percentage worn. I guess I should ask, although he said it depends how long I might keep the car. He said it might last another 15,000 miles but that didn't sound very scientific.
Gearbox is going to be a warranty claim for them.
With the roof they are suggesting it isn't covered. They say it could have been paintwork done outside the network but that's nonsense...

I'd be pretty miffed if I'd had the car less than two months and they were advising a new clutch! If it needs it ask them to do it as goodwill. I'll bet the whole it's just a precaution not needed will be laid on a lot thicker. From my experience main dealers are very quick to advise new parts are required - I had a Cayenne GTS -advised to replace brakes at 19,000 miles - I asked if they had a warning when they needed replaced - advised yes by very helpful technician, who said just make sure you get them done ASAP when the warning light shows. Twenty thousand miles later sold the car (to main dealer!) and light still not on!!!
However, I'd argue like hell for them to replace at their cost anything they advised within three months of buying a used car. I think you may even have some legal protection, worth checking.

Early replacement of pads and disc is an old motor dealer ploy; they try play on the safety aspect.
The clutch is a slightly different in so far as the gearbox had to be dropped, and since yours will be at their expense, if the car is a keep why not, but haggle for more discount.

Ok, so I've managed to get a 25% discount on the clutch parts and there will be no labour to fit. It sounds like people feel this is fair from the dealer, it's precautionary but if the car is a keeper worth doing..
With regards the plastic roof rail the after sales advisor says I would need to take it up with the sales manager? I'm wondering if it is worth the effort...
Often these things are about your perception of fairness so I'm feeling fairly happy thanks to your responses...

How old is your car?
Any car, especially a performance car, is going to cost money to maintain. The fact that you have the OPC warranty should mean much of the cost is covered.
I wouldn't expect mechanical perfection from any used car, and can't see why anyone would. That is why we have the warranty.

It's a 2004...
So 8 years old.Go out and enjoy, enjoy the handling, the performance, the experience. If anything breaks/goes wrong get the OPC to fix it at Porsche expense. If you need to pay for the odd thing then that's just how it is. You have a high performance sports car in your life, enjoy it!.
I'm not sure there is any wrong doing on the part of the dealer here. They are merely offering the chance to replace a consumable part which is quite hard / costly to get at labour free and indeed with a discount on parts for good measure. Being Porsche supplied the clutch will also come with a guarantee - although you have a warranty in place.
In terms of measuring wear the clutch plate is easy enough to measure but the pressure plate and release bearing are not. The former stiffens over time so you might find the clutch lighter after a change or it will stay light for longer than it would have.
I would say a worthwhile thing to do.

One final point... your car is 8 years old and has a 2 year OPC warranty. When this runs out, the car will be too old to renew it, and you'll therefore be on your own with regard to maintenance, and whilst indie servicing is cheaper, its still not cheap. So if the car is a keeper then paying 75% of the part for a new clutch now, with labour free, sounds quite a good deal
