Watching the Harrier with awe at the end of the runway at Farnborough, enjoying a king cone '99' (not 69!) on Saturday afternoon. Along walks PC. Dudley Dooright.

-Who's Ducati is this?
-Mine
-Nice isn't it?
-Yes
-Your number plate............
-Yes
-Its illegal
-Is it?
-(Mrs VT intervenes) Havent you got anything better to do?
-I was bored of moving cones so I came looking for easy pickings!! Your plate contravenes Road traffic act 666 etc. Blah blah.... If the plate is too small then Speed Cameras cannot pick the vehicle out.
-Really?

Typical, got a £30 fine! He was trying to get me to ride down to his van to sort out the paper work. Lucky I didn't as the Termi's may have blown his cap off. Amazing how quick you can hide an iridium visor.

Weren't you parked up off-road?

Surely if not on the road you weren't committing any offence?

Or am I talking shite again?

I was sitting in the garden Sat, relaxing, like you do, when 4 harriers in close diamond formation buzzed the house at what seemed like about 250 feet, low enough to see the grin the buggers faces

Marvellous.

Red Arrows were good too!

Anyhow, I only thought about the parked off HM's highway about an hour after the event when many more ideas of cocky comments (re. revenue raising etc., etc.) came into mind. I have made the donation to the Tony B. Liar retirement fund now; I am surprised at the fact that I do not have to get the plate changed and produce the paperwork at the local Pigpen?

If the plate was completely illegible/lairy/altered/MAX-tacky then I would have more empathy for my wrong-doing but as the digits were standard font and only 3mm shy of the law I am left feeling no urgency to pop the Billboard back on.

Is that £30 fine and no points?

Yes, I paid the donation over the phone. I feel good about it though because it will be ploughed back into road surfaces etc. around the country.

If you were inside the fence, surely you are not on the public road?

I used to work there, and a fair few mornings when I pulled up at X-area, I'd be followed in by a furious mod-plod who proceeded to rant. Worst they could do was ban me from the base.

I suppose things might have changed since it probably isn't a government site anymore.

Anyway, bad luck, dude.
