"Porsche, after Ferrari, is the best car".

Taking it as a compliment. Hes hardly going to say Ferrari are 2nd best, and he couldve picked any car company.

Correct. One look at this is enough to confirm that statement ostensibly as fact:

After owning quite a few examples of both brands I can positively say this:
Porsche make the finest cars in the world.

Ferrari's are made like absolute 5hit. Absolute dog 5hit. Doesn't always stop me wanting one mind, but I've yet to jump into a Ferrari and think, "wow this is a quality product."
So many of Ferrari's recent cars are a triumph of marketing (like so much stuff made in Italy).

At one time i would agree, somethings on the Ferrari dont last but the engines i think are stronger than Porsches so it would seem.

I think that line sums it up for me. Yes style over substance, but the style is such it is hard to ignore. Conversely, Porsche can seem at times dull by comparison but, there again, it is the thoroughness of the engineering that appeals. Underpinning all this then is typically Italian and German approaches toward the same goal and I'm glad this battle exists..

+1
Enzo always said customers are paying for a great engine, and the rest of the car is free. Their engines are awesome, even the 212 I was lucky enough to chuck about. A little 2.5 litre V12 - outstanding !!!!

I'll stick my neck out and say that NOW, the engines in Porsche's most sporting cars are actually better engineered and even more exciting than Ferrari's.

The Enzo's V12 has nothing on the Carrera GT's V10. Not from sound, not from response, and certainly not from build quality (I've got quite a few horror stories for this V12 from Ferrari which found it's way into the 599). Sure it may have more power but then it's quite a bit bigger than the CGT's V10. It's really not a very good V12..
Porsche's unburstable GT3 engines lay waste to the Ferraris V8 (in the 430s) - more gutsy low down, a fuller deeper, power delivery a nicer sound (volume aside) and a mega top end - AND they just take more punishment - hammer a 430 Scud on track like a GT3 and see what happens..... (don't have enough experience of the 458 but I bet the 4.0l in the last GT3 was more special than the Maserati-derived engine in the 458).

Ferrari's last really special engines were IMO, the 360's V8 and the utterly wild V12 in the F50 (which ONLY Ferrari could make). Before that the Boxer Flat 12's were utterly magnificent - truly race derived. But then the Flat 6 in the 911 has been equally exciting (noth NA and Turbo guise) for decades. Ferrari's V8s and V12 WERE special but IMO they're nothing to write home about now.....loads share bits with Maserati's, the F1 scream has gone to be replaced by blaring boomy volume and they're just soo fragile.
And this is from someone who has a 458 Spider on order... I must be mad... still wish I'd kept my 996RS!
Just my 2cents...

Agree with 90% of the above except for the comment on Porsche flat sixes sounding better than a 430 engine. I think 430 engines sound boomy and untuneful and don't really like them; they're miles ahead of the Porsche flat sixes though, they're the most boring sounding thing put into a £70k+ car this side of the 3.0tdi in an A8. They're a mix of drone and rattle. I thought a PSE'd 996 Carrera sounded okay but the Mezger engines are as much a background noise as 'road-noise' is on a motorway. (IMO)

The Colombo engines were Ferrari's golden period, they sound and feel like you're at the centre of the universe, which is a big part of what these special beasts are about smile

With respect to mechanical design integrity Porsche are significantly better than Ferrari.

I find it a bit odd that as a company purporting to be obsessed with engines, Ferrari carry on making them with cambelts. Anyone know why?

430 and models onwards dont have belts they are chain driven.
