Negative scanners

Hi, have done a search to no avail, anyone got any experiences of 35mm negative scanners.

Have just discovered a load of old negative i thought had been lost in a house move and would love to get them onto a pc. Thanks for any help... Not looking to spend a fortune, up to £100 perhaps.

My father done this many moons ago. Most cheap scanners will come with a negative holder, and you just tell the software that you're scanning negatives. It'll then scan at a high res (of your choice) and then chop and rotate them for you.

Scanning negatives takes a lot of time so I spent rather more on a scanner as I didn't want to waste the time I put into it. If you look at some of the reviews on the Amazon link many of them say things like 'ok for the money' & then give it 4 stars.

I bought a Plustek unit in the end: the only thing I would say is get one with infra-red dust & scratch removal. I found it made a huge difference to the results.

The other thing is to pre-screen the negatives & realise it's probable that not every one is worth scanning.

I did a little research and opted for an Epson V500. About £150 and also does MF 6x6. I have read the V700 is alot better if you can afford it.

light box and macro lens will give considerably better results

I bought a Nikon Coolscan IV off Ebay late last year for around £360 and it gives very good results. It will be going back on there for the same money in a couple of weeks time. One had 14 bids last week and achieved the same amount, so it might be a good way forward for you. (I'm not trying to sell you mine, I'm just suggesting the principle might work for you too as I was in the same position when I bought mine...didn't want to spend much on something I won't use again once I'd scanned my slides!)

Bought one of these and very pleased with the resusts, very fast and easy to use and even got reaonable results from 35 year old 110 negatives.

I bought a Canon 5600F after reading good reviews. It's a good scanner but as always, only as good as your negatives. It's usually available for under £100. The main downside is it's quite big, like a small mattress but it's very easy to use once you realise you have to take the white inside panel out for negative scanning. It does one strip plus two frames at a time.
