Layover in Singapore...can I leave for sightseeing or am I stuck?
Discussion
Just a quick one chap/esses, I have a 18 hour layover in Singapore soon and I was thinking instead of getting pissed and sleeping, could I escape and see a bit of the outside world whilst there? I've not had any longer available to me than a few hours before so the thought has not previously crossed my mind!
I look to the experienced jet-setters here to see me right
Thank you!

Difficult to get drunk in Singapore. I think it was £9 a pint when I was there about five years ago!
I only had a couple of days so I'm sure somebody has better info, but we just had a wander round the city, popped over to Sentosa on the cable-car (the island itself is a bit Disneyland though). We went to the night zoo which was quite neat since most animals are more active. They've designed it very cleverly so the separating fences are more subtle than most zoos I've been to.
The public transport system there is ace and I seem to remember they have a hopper bus to get around the tourist bits so that might be a good way to kill a few hours.

Take the No36 bus from the terminal to the city. Clarke Quay and Boat Quay are good for food and a beer or two. If you walk from the Fullerton Hotel to Robertson Quay you see most of the sights and bars. Orchard Road if you want to shop, but there is nothing there that you can’t get here, and cheaper. Even PC components are cheaper in the UK. As for a bed, you could stay down town but the hotels are quite pricey, I stay at the Mecure Roxy, which is out of town, between the city and the airport. Get a Taxi from the city to there and then take their comp shuttle bus to the terminal.
Little India, and China town worth a look too
The 36 bus is on a loop and it tops right outside the Mecure hotel

We went to Raffles in the evening and had the sling, just to tick it off the life-list more than anything. There was live music when we went and it a nice evening, although we didn't stay too long.
A poor guy offered to buy another round of Singapore Slings without realising they're about £20 each. Nearly bankrupted him
