Hi,

After looking at the chat about "cheap" porsches, I went to check out a 2000/2001 era Boxster S but found it rather tight in the cabin, not too much room in the footwell etc. Do the newer 987 / Facelift versions have more room?

I fitted in a 997 fine if this is of any help...

Over to the experts!

I've had a 997 and 2 987s and felt pretty much the same in them, though obviously the seat doesn't recline very far in the Boxster!.

I find the Boxster a lot more practical.. the rear boot is fine for most shopping. Using the front boot or the back seat of the 997 got on my nerves pretty quickly.

I'm 6ft 2in and have had both a 986 and 987.

The 987 definitely has more head and legroom, I seem to remember that it was a 'selling point' at the launch in 2005.

Yep, 987 generally roomier than 986 for tall people. How much headroom do you need in a convertible though... wink

I'm 6ft 6, so need all the extra room I can get! Seems like the 987 would be worth checking out from a space point of view - good to know!

I'm 6'4" with pretty long legs. I had a 987 Cayman S which was perfectly comfortable to drive. BUT I did find I had to take my shoes off to be really comfortable, and my left leg got in the way of turning the wheel when maneuvering around town/car parks. I got rid of the car (at a huge lose) after about 10 months as a result.

So at 6'6" I'd think long and hard about what it would be like to LIVE with the car. The Cayman was fine on a test drive, but when I tried to live with it and use it as a daily drive the leg room issue became too great.

I am 5'6" and its (the Spyder) plenty big enough for me.

Can get my track bike (in bits) into both the boots plus all my kit and food without using any cabin space.

On the 986, you can remove the front section of the centre console as per the 996 GT3. Google "GT3 console delete". This will certainly give you more space for your left leg (RHD). You can also look into seat lowering kits from Brey-Krause and others....

There a lot more room in the 987s. The seat sits lower and the steering wheel can adjusts up and down .

I found that the full electric package added more adjustment when compared to the standard mechanical/electrical set up. The whole seat can drop lower to release more clearance.

I too am 6' 2 and find that if I get the seat back at an angle that is just off the vertical, drop the rear and pull it back to the firewall, I can sweep around the wheel without hitting the knees.

At 6'6" I'd say you were just too big I'm afraid.

Everyone's different but I find even the 987 is pretty cramped for the size of the car IMO

I'm only 6' tall, but one of the main reasons I didn't swap into the Cayman R was due to lack of leg room, causing me to get back ache on a 1 hr drive.

The car did have the fancy electric seats and I was due to try the bucketed Spyder to see if that helped (assuming the same cockpit dimensions?) - however, the sheeite trade in offered killed it stone dead anyway.

I am hoping the new Boxster/Cayman are better?

NSM... you must be a very odd shape! smilesmile To be 'only' 6'0" and not have enough leg room. However the electric seats might have been part of the problem. From my showroom testing the electric seats didn't go quite as far back, or as low, as the manual seats.
