Anyone happen to know numbers produced of the different body styles?

I've just bought an XK140 DHC and wondered if they're particularly rare and what they're worth in restoration state and fully restored condition

Firstly I wish you to know that I am intensely jealous!
As much as I love my XK150, over the years I've owned it I've come to covert a 140DHC, the Mrs has finally agreed we can start looking in a couple of years, YIPPEEE

Are they worth restoring YES
over the last year of so XK140s seem to have become the flavour of the month. Even the FHC (my least favourite XK) have been going up in value rapidly. When I bought my 150 back in 2005, 140FHC were the cheapest of the XKs - no more.

If you get a copy of Philip Porters "Original XK" you'll find a full breakdown of the production numbers in the back. Its well worth having a copy, particularly if you are looking at restoring the car. I think a third edition is due soon.

Total production for RHD XK140 73 OTS, 839 FHC & 480 DHC.

You can find a lot of XKs on www.xkdata.com, many are listed there.
There are a couple of archivists trying to log the histories of all XKs, David Bentley at the XK Club, and John Elmgreen on the XK list of Jag-lovers, would both dearly like to know the details of your car to add to their lists. You may be interested in joining the XK Club too.

Pictures please.

Enjoy

and did I mention I was jealous?

Of all the 140's the DHC is the most coveted, because it has an easily raisable roof and also because of the beautiful walnut dash, not to be found on the roadster. The lines of the car follow the 120 but with a slightly heavier look to the bumpers and a mazak grille, but in general it is one of the prettiest and commands big prices if in good condition. £70/100,000 is about the asking price, but restoration will, if professionally carried out, cost more than the final value of the car depending of course on the amount of work necessary. Many convert to discs at the front, some add power steering, and many opt to uprate to a 3.8 from the 3.4. Cooling is a bugbear, most cars having a Kenlowe in front of the radiator. I wish you much joy. Oh, and I think I am right in that 430 RHD DHC's were made and 2363 LHD, so if it is RHD it is rare given the loss rate over the years.

Ah, but there was - well sort of! Many moons back Guy Broad concocted a car that was a mixture of XK120 and XK140 and then it was shown to a rather well known Jaguar writer as "the missing link" If I recall correctly this was around the first day of April, and I reckon mid-90's. the journalist swallowed the hook, line, sinker, the rod, reel and the fisherman's boat with it. It made a wonderful article in Jaguar world, it did.

But as for the real answer to your question - I don't know. I mean, we had the XK150 and the next was the 180, so where did the 160 and 170 go as well?

Many thanks Guys....Much appreciated.

a8hex.......No need to be jelly, 150's were always my fave, you have a great car.

I should expand a bit.

The car is a LHD and has lived all its live in California (lucky car) so it is very very solid with absolutely no rst visible and its in a rather flat and patina'd state and partially stripped inside.

The car runs and I think without too much trouble I can get it running and registered and I might even use it as is.

I will post up pics as soon as I can.

This might be one car too many for me and one too much of a project at the moment so watch this space, we'll see.

Will keep you posted.

That looks a treat.

How did you find it? Ebay? Prices for XK-E's all seem so cheap over there.

Mine came with one of those hammers too, I didn't realise it was a bonus smile
They come in rather useful.

Actually I bought a gadget off someone on eBay a while back to let me use a standard socket on a long bar to handle the knock offs. Now I just need to find a 38mm socket. Looks very nicely made mind.

Its looking like you've got lots of work to do, but that everything is solid which is where the biggest expenses tend to come. Even the seat looks OK apart from the split from seem but I'm sure that will fix up OK (I'm not a big fan of new leather in old cars).

Nice one, and good luck and I promise to keep the green eyed monster under control biggrin

You'll get one in Halfords a8; it's quite a common size on some hub nuts on moderns, and I managed to get one there.

Cheers Jith, it was really just a question of getting around to getting off my lazy btm.
When I bought the gadget, the car was away waiting for me to finally decide on the gearbox.
Do they come in 1/2" or do I need 3/4" and have to carry the converter around too?
(see I'm being lazy again)

Cheers Guys....The car was viewed by a reliable source in the States.

E Types are relatively cheap but the standard of paint and trim is very rarely good but if you need a car to restore then it has to come from a dry state. I have just spent 24k JUST on metal on my E Type resto (typical UK car)

I really like that - it's the sort of car I tend to buy - needing work but original. Good luck and let us know how it all goes.
