Well, the deed is done...

Somewhere near Coventry they are assembling (or soon will be) a British Racing Green X-type Sport 3.0 5 speed for myself with all the goodies.

Thanks to all Pistonheaders that gave me input to my next daily driver

Also, small item of note. I had to leave a $ 1000 NON REFUNDABLE deposit with my dealer. It seems that they have a hard time moving the 3.0 sports with 5 speeds here in the US. (Imagine that)

By the way I did drive all of the competition (Merc, Audi, BMW even a Volvo) and the X-type is head and shoulders above the rest for "fun factor" (Remember, my other toy is an Esprit, and I still had fun in the X-type, so that should say something...)

Will post some pics when I take delivery in early/mid July. Until then...

This is what she will look like...

Ernest, what do you think a Jag says about you on the road in the US? Not trying to pick a fight, I'm just curious.

In the UK, a Jag is a bit of an old man's car -- though the ads they ran incessantly for weeks would have think otherwise. Have to say though that if I were in the market for a daily runner around the £20-£23k mark (yup, you guessed it, they're more expensive here than in the US -- wonder what that's all about? ), I'd consider an X-Type.

I suppose that makes me an old man...

Well, I am 38 now so...

Actually, the marketing drive in the US is more toward the BMW 3 and Merc C and E crowd (30 - 40). Also, considering that there is not a single domestically produced sedan that even carries a hint of the Jags styling, it is a good choice.

"Old Man's Cars" over here still remain the Land Yachts produced by Lincoln (Town Car, etc), Buick and some Cadillacs (although Lutz is trying to change that image). All eurosedans in the X-type's class are considered "upwardly mobile professional" vehicles. World of difference, eh?

...also, forgot to add...

This X-type, with sport package and 5 speed is quite a nice little "sleeper". It also likes what few twisty bits in the road that we have over here.

While I would never think of using it on a track day, it is an engaging "driver's car". Also, since there are no Mondeos over here, the comparisons are not drawn to often...

Sorry to disagree with you but there most certainly are Mondeos in the US. Last time I was in Washington I hired one, it was virtually identical but had a different name (which I can't recall).

Ford Contour / Mercury Mystique. They stopped selling them in 2000. Just meant that the "Mondeo" name is not well known to the general man on the street.

Neither was Contour or Mystique as they didn't sell very well...

ErnestM,

Wise choice - would seriously consider one myself. Drove one the first 2.5 Sports in this country and was VERY impressed with it. Not quite the build quality as my old A4, but A LOT more fun to drive and a nicer interior than the classic german oppressive BMW / Merc job.

Ok, so the rear leg room is crap and the image in the UK is slightly "old man" - but the car is good and with the sport pack and a couple of options a fairly wise buy. Rumour here is that they arent sell as many as they hoped for, but this is splitting hairs - they are selling in good numbers and the customer base is currently happy. No nasty suprises so far.

Nice colour too - the blue is good too.

Cheers,

Paul

Actually blue was my second choice, but there is just something "spiritual" about the Racing Green

Know what you mean about green -- the colour of my TVR (a 48-year-old speaks ).

And here's me thinking X-Types were built at Halewood by good old Liverpool hands...
