Music that reminds you of your parents.

Off the back of the Zapp thread I started to think about all the records my parents used to play in the house when I was growing up. So after a quick trip down memory lane these are some of the records that make me think of the old man and put a smile on my face.

Basically the old man loved that what I call Soul and Jazz/Funk Fusion sound. These are just a handful of songs I used to hear growing up. The thing I love about this music to this day is that it has always been a bond between the old man and me. The Bernard Wright album NARD being the man one. Playing Snoop Dogg's Doggystyle LP at loud volume one day he walked in the room told me to put this record on and hearing the original samples really clicked for me. From then on I was constantly bringing him new rap records asking if he had the original sample or anything similar. We still trade records these days, well it's mostly one way lol but the thought is there.

If I had to pick one record though that was my dad I'd say it has to be Joyous - Pleasure. This was played in the car and through out the house non stop. I loved it.

Johnny Cash on an old eight-track - showing my age now! Still enjoy listening to him and all the more for the memories it evokes.

Anything by simon and garfunkle, he used to listen to them on a tatty old personal cd player while he was having chemo. Needsless to say we played them at his funeral as per his wishes.

Father - massively accomplished pianist; would play anything.

Mother - Doris Day

Showing my age here but my parents always used to listen to Mantovani, James Last or Herb Alpert in the evenings after I'd gone to bed. This probably makes them sound a bit fuddy duddy but actually my mum used to listen to Radio 1 all day (this is back in the '70s) and my dad liked nothing better than listening with me to a great Neil Peart or John Bonham drum solo. However it's the Mantovani that really reminds me of them.

Your old man is a rare connoiseur of taste & distinction. Apart from Zapp of course. I grew up listening to all that stuff as my brother was a serious soul & funk head. Ronnie Laws, Roy Ayres, Stevie Wonder, Lonnie Liston Smith, Herbie Hancock, Slave, Mystic Merlin - before Freddie Jackson went all Whitney Houston & left for a career in ballads. That stuff was the soundtrack of my youth. Then I bought a guitar & everything changed...

Band On The Run and Red Rose Speedway, my dad played them over and over and over although i didn't really appreciate it at the time now they're stone cold classics.

I grew up listening to Marty Robbins, The Platters, Nat King Cole, Johny Cash etc. All my father. My mother wasn't into music at all.
First album I bought was Jungle Book, followed by Led Zep 4. How's that?

To be fair to the old man he wasn't a Zapp fan. I found out about them all by myself I've honestly never heard of Mystic Merlin. Good shout.
