I have a 924S 1987. For some reason the original owner (there's only 2 prior to me)did not have power steering fitted as optional. The car was for my wife's 50th birthday and now has developed a bad shoulder and finds it too heavy to drive, park etc. I would like to fit power steering if I can find the parts second hand (new too expensive. Any advice etc on what problems I face, as do i need to fit another column?

I wouldnt be surprised if it was much easier and a lot cheaper to sell it and buy one with PS.

this, although whatever route you chose, get your wife to try a 924s/944 with power steering before you do anything. 944s with PAS have relatively heavy steering compared to a lot of cars - it'd be a shame to spend all that money and it still not work for your wife.

This is true, it is nothing like a modern car, thank god, and still feels quite heavy.

I am pretty certain that it can be done quite easily, as said above check out the PCGB and TIPEC sites.

back to back with a 996T my 944 had very heavy steering - or rather the 996 felt very light.
As I drove away my 944 generally felt much more solid but I'm sure you'd get used to either quite quickly.
Its just different.

Relatively straight forward to do, the shell even has the mount for the fluid reservoir.

You will need another bracket to mount the pump on the engine, the belt, pump, rack and the peculiar cooling coil that mounts in the corner of wing/spoiler, the reservoir and pipes, I think thats all.

I'd contact one of the breakers on the PCGB and TIPEC forums.

Perhaps it may be better to change the wife and keep the car, but thanks for all your help

Of course you could ask at the 924 owners club

http://www.porsche924.co.uk/

Who managed to assemble 62 924s at the silverstone porsche experience centre last weekend for the 924s 35th anniversary!
