Just checking my options, I've only ever owned manual cars, however I was wondering what your opinions are on the tiptronic box in the 996? Do they have paddles on the wheel, and is it responsive? I've heard "rumours" that it won't change as quickly as you would like, however I'd like to hear from owners who know their cars.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've had two tiptronic Porsche's and enjoyed them both. Never had a auto before, it changes gear when you expect it to, its smoother and yet if you want to give it the beens it provides the goods with out worry of it bouncing into the red of the tacho.
Sometimes I use the manual mode but 99% of the time I leave it in auto. I still reckon it can change gear quicker than most people using manuals, 0.2 sec IIRC(on full chat)

Love my tip box in my 996. It depends what you use the car for though. For me its great as i use it for a commute. Also when you floor it its very clever as it drops 1 or 2 gears depending on how much warp you want. 2nd gear is just so flexible too. I occasionally hanker for a manual but overall the tip box is an excellent compromise. Tip 996 are better value too IMHO. It wouldnt be something you regretted unless you you were tracking it the whole time.

Totally agree with all the above, I luv my 996 tip, manual mode is great for when your stuck in traffic, just click it over and it holds the gear your in, stops the box changing up and down all the time whilst in traffic

A MkI 996 Carrera was my dads first auto car. He said once you'd learned to master it, it was a very good gearbox - but after driving manuals for all his life it became boring. I think the tiptronic makes the N/A cars feel more lethargic too, although I've heard they're well suited to the Turbo.

Just bought a Tip Boxster 3.2S & was in two minds whether I wanted a Tip or a manual. Not done many miles yet but the Tip is pretty good, it certainly goes well.

I have had a Boxster S, 996 C4 Cab and a 997 C2S, all were manual. I fancied a change and got into a couple of cars with tiptronic type boxes, got bored and my last car, R8 was manual

The next one is going to be tiptronic, I think, but then again, it is a Porsche so its gotta be manual right.....

All depends on the type of driving you do, if you sit in a lot of traffic a manuals no fun at all, it also comes down to the actual car, so drive both and see what you prefer

That's exactly what I am gonna do when I start hassling the guys at Paragon next week and whether manual or tip, it doesn't matter, they are all great cars!

My current 911 has a manual gearbox. It is for nice days, track days and race days. Far more involving to drive. If I had no other choice than to use it as my daily commute I'd have a tip. Far too mnay traffic jambs around here for the manual box. I'd say drive both and see which you prefer.

I'm not sure I would have a Tip 996 unless you spend a lot of time in traffic.

On later cars PDK is 1st choice, always, but I'm not sure Tip is the choice for enjoyment.

Tips are OK but they can be slow to change, I had my tip rebuilt & it was still a bit sluggish. I told the garage ,it came back a bit sharper I believe they tweaked the software, what they did say though was that it was mainly down to the "Fly by Wire" throttle delay. Might be a good idea to have this sorted if yours is a bit sluggish. There not quite the seat of your pants but there not that bad, I always used it as a nippy GT car that was stylish & pretty good on fuel considering the performance available. A real steal right now IMO.

I'd just like to add: if you test drive a tip be aware that they take a while to 'learn' to get the best out of them. I only drive autos due to a problem with my left foot. The tiptronic works well I reckon - far superior to your run of the mill runabout auto.

Forgot to say when you do test drive one,put it into drive, then using the steering wheel buttons press it down to manually select "1st gear" (make sure you are on a long traffic free road) floor & hold the throttle, it will change to 2nd @ 7000rpm ... quite impressive & may possibly change your mind about Tips wink

This discussion in its simplest form is do you want a manual or an auto. Tip is Porsche parlance for auto, it makes the word auto palatable. The box is an MB autobox.
