Bit of a rant but does anyone know how many roads are currently closed and/or have roadworks on them? Have genuinely never seen the roads as bad as they are right now.

Edinburgh fking council are seriously taking the fking piss at the moment. Easilly takes me twice as long to get to or from work at the moment (Costorphine to Lothian Road) and only the other day did the big fat stupid wkers decide to shut Balgreen Road off as well while they are at it.

I know the vast majority of this is tram related which pisses me off even more as no-one wants the fking things anywhere near the capital.

And breathe....

ETA - sorry for the swearing, i've calmed down now after finally finding a good way home!

I feel your pain. As an outsider, Falkirk, I would like to know how many business's have either failed or have reduced potential through this ill-thought glory project.

For a Capital city to have subjected itself to this level of Fuqwittery is beyond comprehension. Never mind what is going to happen when they are actually running trams(if ever), a bus can swerve or take relatively safe avoiding action when some camera-toting tourist strays in front of them. Tram=jam!

It's a good point. I worry that no-one has registered the fact that bus's sit in one lane and the tram lines actually run in the other - where does that leave the cars?

Do Edinburgh stty Council actually care?

Hateful city to drive in, probably on purpose.

After the sensible Edinburgh voters said no to the proposed congestion charge, the Council went into car & driver punishment mode. As the internet fraternity saying goes "Haters gonna hate!".

I was in Edinburgh earlier this week and it is crazy how many roads are closed off. I can't remember seeing the centre of Edinburgh without extensive roadworks!

I used to go into Edinburgh approx once every 2 weeks for a bar lunch and a wander round the shops. Switched to Glasgow over a year ago due to the tram works etc. While the M8 though Glasgow isnt pretty it makes getting into town much less hassle.

I can't stand driving in the city centre.... the roads are like patchwork quilts... quite shocking. Worst roads I have ever driven on.

So many potholes, so many dropped manhole covers... drives me mad....

I grew up in Edinburgh but now live and work in Fife. Every time I drive through the capital now I just can’t believe how bad the roads are. I hate to think what it will be like once the trams start running. What was wrong with the excellent bus service?

For the cost of the trams, Edinburgh Council could have resurfaced every main road in and out of the capital AND had money left over to build a new Sick Kids hospital. Alternatively, they could have supplied junkets for life to the freeloading councillors.

They certainly did go into punishment mode as they took retribution by doubling my residential parking permit to £320 (£400 for a second car).

At least I have a garage now.

Much of the line that is going in doesn't affect roads open to cars.

Its only once it comes city bound through what is now the former Haymarket Station taxi rank does it then come on to West Maitland Street, Coates/Manor Place, Shandwick Place and along Princes Street, turns up South St Andrew and North St Andrew St and gets to the end of its line once it turns east on to York Place.

I've no idea how they propose to merge the line with the Haymarket junction traffic flow & West Maitland St (though its bound to involve more traffic lights) but Shandwick Place and Princes Street were & will no doubt continue to be open buses/taxis only.

Along the other end York Place is wide enough for all & cars could be put over North/South St David Street to cut through that area and to access St Andrews square, as the current diversions have all traffic doing.

In the event that anyone reads this and thinks I'm somehow defending the idea think again, I have to negotiate these roads for work on an regular basis and it is the single most ridiculous idea I have ever known to actually get past planning stages.

Still, council elections on the 3rd May!

It's the same in West Lothian. It was taking me 25 minutes to do a 10 minute, 5 mile journey into Bathgate at one point. And there's still a few sets of them happening. The worst was a bridge replacement on the main A89 road that took much longer than it was supposed to and resulted in long detours round residential streets, which will no doubt need fixed now from all the buses and HGVs using them! It's as if they have lots of money left in the budget, so they allocate it to pointless roadworks. I'd rather the patched up and sorted the bits of road that actually need repairing and not just resurfacing main roads for the hell of it. Or in the case of one area in Bathgate, the council putting up unnecessary permanent 4 way traffic lights outside their shiny new partnership centre.

I only have to go into Edinburgh from the FRB to Barnton and turn left to end up in Edinburgh Park. Even that short journey is disturbed by all the tram shenanigens. What a bloody mess they have made of Edinburgh generally. It's going to take generations to fix it.

Come off at SQ and go through Kirkliston for a change. Both ways are stty but a change is as good as a rest.

I count 87 roads in Edinburgh alone that are closed, partially closed or with some sort of roadworks to cause congestion.
